Location of the Akkara Homestay
Akkara Homestay is located at the foothills of the Western Ghats and by the side of the Vembanad lake.
Akkara Homestay is situated in a secluded place on the banks of the meenachil river. The home stay has the period furniture , quaint rooms, terracittafloors, and a large open courtyard. The hostess will be Mrs. Shantha Kurien.
This is an ideal place for those who love to spend some time, tasting some traditional syrian christian cuisine like Kappa meen curry ( Tapioca and fish curry ), red coloured fish curries with and without coconut, Chilli beef fry etc. You have to put in the request for lunch and dinner if you plan to eat at home.
How to get to Akkara Homestay
You have to reach Kottayam first to reach Akkara Homestay. As soon as you reach Thiruvananthapuram / Kochi / Kozhikode International airports of Kerala, you can get either trains / cabs / buses to Kottayam. Kochi is the nearest airport at about 91 kilometers from Kottayam. There uis a ferry station at Kottayam which has ferries to take you across various places through the backwaters.
Akkara Homestay is located at about 5 kilometers from the Kotayam town. Just ask the driver to go towards Chungam bridge. Just before reaching chungam bridge you will be needed to take a deviation towards old seminary of the Orthodox syrian sect. There is a untarred road by the side of the seminary. If you go about 50 mters in to the road and turn right you will find the boat jetty. You can find ( or call for one ) a boat to take you acoss to the Akkara Homestay.
The best time for travel to the Kottayam district will be May to July and August to February. May to July will be the monsoon time and the best one to see variety of birds and flora in the area.
Food and Accommodation facilities at akkara Homestay
There are 2 airconditioned rooms amd 2 non air conditioned rooms with double bed facility and attached baths available. @ more A/c rooms are available in the partnering property of the same area.
Food facilities have fixed meal plans, Tea / Coffee / coconut water as and when you like, picnic lunches will be packed if requested earlier.
There is a common TV room with a small lilbrary and internet facility.
STD / ISD phone facility, laundry facility, pick up and drop facility from the airport, railway station and bus stand are also available.
House boat cruises on the backwaters can be arranged, with full board and over night stay if needed are available.
Guides are available, if informed earlier, for the treks and walks in the villages by the side of the backwaters.
Ayurvedic massages like Uzhichhil and Pizhichil and many more are available on request.
Tariff includes linen, morning coffee / tea with breakfast.
Children below 2 and half years can get in free.
Lunch and dinner are available on request at extra charges.
