About Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Malappuram
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Malappuram is a completely residential school financed by the Government of India and run by an autonomous organization, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It is one of the well established schools in the district. It is located at Oorakam Kizhmuri, 10 Kms away from Malappuram town. It has started with a mission to give modern and standard education to the bright and talented rural students who are from financially backward families.The Education is given free to all the students including free lodging, food, uniforms, textbooks and stationary. But a nominal fee of 200 rupees per month is collected from the students from class IX to class XII. This is not applicable to children belonging to SC/ST, Girls and those whose family is from the Below Poverty Line class. The standard of given in education given in Navodaya Vidyalaya is far better than the education given at other private schools in the district.
There is a museum in the school which is developed by the teachers and students of the school. Vidyalaya also contains a lot of sculptures made by the Art teacher and students of the school. It also has a well maintained and beautiful garden. To develop National Integration (according to the policy of the samiti) 30% students of class IX migrate to Navodaya Allahabhad to complete their one year education. Similarly the students of Navodaya Allahabhad also come to Navodaya Malappuram. This help to develop relationship between the students of two different states. This also helps the student to develop their language skills in Hindi. The students take part in a lot of community works and condut awareness classes for the local community. Vidyalaya is also giving equal importance to co-curricular activities. The students have shown their abilities by participating and winning prizes in various competition conducted by the government and NVS.
Objectives Navodaya Vidyalaya
1) To provide modern and standard quality of education to bright and talented children who are from poor families in the rural areas.
2) To make sure that the students are able to speak and write 3 languages
3) To improve the quality of school education in rural areas through sharing of experiences and facilities
Admission to Navodaya Vidyalaya
Admission is done to class VI through a National Level competitive Examination (JNVST) conducted by the NVS under Central Board of Education. The test is largely non-verbal and objective in nature and is designed to prevent any disadvantage to children from rural areas. A total of 80 bright students are selected from the district. Students are also admitted to class IX to the vacant seats available in the vidyalaya. This system is devised to fill the vacancies that arise due to withdrawal of admissions of the children who are admitted in class VI.
Eligibility
1) Candidate appearing for test must be in class V in a government recognized school.
2) Age between 9 and 13
3) A student of class III, IV and V in a Government recognized school in a rural area, to apply for a rural quota.
4) A first time appearer in the entrance exam
Fees
Till Class XI, the entire education including lodging, food, uniform and stationeries are provided at free of cost. But a nominal fee of Rs 200 per month is collected from the students from class IX to class XII. Students belonging to SC/ST, girls and students' whose family comes under BPL are exempted from this nominal fee.
Reservation
A total of 75% of seats are reserved for rural children and a minimum of 33% of seats are reserved for girls. SCs/STs also have due reservations of 15% & 7% respectively
Accommodation and Dinning hall
Separate accommodation for girls and boys are provided. The hostels are according to 'house system'. House masters are appointed to each house. Food is provided from the school mess. Separate dinning halls are provided for girls and boys.

The school is situated at Oorakam kizhmuri, which is 10 kms away Malappuram town on Malappuram-Vengara road. One can catche the private buses running between Vengara and Malappuram.
