This is a brief biography about the famous poet of Kerala, Shri. O.N.V Kuruppu.

Padmashri O.N.V Kuruppu

Ottaplavil Neelakandan Vrlu Kuruppu, popularly known as O.N.V Kuruppu is famous Malayalam poet as well as a great film song writer. He was born in May 27, 1931. After his excellent Academic performance, he served as a Malayalam Lecturer and Professor. He was the second Keralite to won a Njanapeedam Award for Malayalam poetry after J Shankara Kuruppu. In 1948, his poem known as 'Arivalum Raakkuyilum' has got the Changampuzha Award. From there he was honored by so many awards. O.N.V is also an excellent film song writer and he has got so many awards in that field also. He is the winner of Padmashri award from the Government of India in 1998.He has also got many State awards also.

Family of ONV

ONV Kuruppu was born in 27th May, 1931 being a son of O.N Krishnakuruppu and Lakshmikkutty Amma and is born at a place known as Chavara in Kollam district. His wife's name is Sarojini and they have two children named Rajeevan and Mayadevi. Nowadays ONV Kuruppu and his family is settled in Thiruvananthapuram at a place known as Vazhuthakkad.

ONV's Education and Proffessional Life

ONV primary and seconadary education was completed from Government School of Chavara and after that he took a graduaion with a bachelor degree in Economics. After that he joined Kerala University and took post graduation in Malayalam literature. Then he served as a lecturer in Maharajas College-Eranakulam,
University College- Trivandrum, Arts and Science College- Kozhikode etc. He retired from the service in 1986.

ONV's Stepping Stone to Malayalam Poetry

From the school days itself ONV showed his poetrical talents and has got many prizes. His first published poem was 'Munnottu' in the age of 17. And his first poetry collection came out in 1949 with a name 'Poruthunna Soundaryam'. After that there was the golden period of ONV Kuruppu in Malayalam poetry till now. HE has published many books and is also a lyricist in Malayalam Cinema.
