K Kelappan- The Kerala Gandhi K Kelappan was a great politician from Kerala who fought for the rebirth of Kerala from the dark era of slavery and castism to the shining lights of equality and freedom. He was very much attracted to Gandhian ideologies and used to follow this in his life. For the same reason, he is known as ‘Kerala Gandhi’. This great leader was born in a place known as Moodadi near Payyoli in Calicut district of Kerala on 9th September 1890. He fought for the social reforms of the people of Kerala against the British rules. He is one among the major freedom fighters from Kerala.
Educational and Professional Life of K Kelappan K Kelappan completed his school education from the schools of Koyilandi and Payyoli. He spent his college days in Calicut and madras and he got graduation from Madras University. He started his profession as a teacher in St. Berkkuman’s College in Changanasseri. After all he was focused to the freedom movements of India and fought for the social reforms in Kerala.
K Kelappan as a freedom fighter It was during his teaching periods in S.B School of Changanasseri, he met with Mannath Padmanabhan and accepted the presidentship of Nair Service Society. In 1920, he went to Bombay for his higher education in Law, but he didn’t complete the course, on the other hand he went to attend the Non-cooperation Movement. Then he started his social life as a Congress secretary of Ponnani Taluk. He was also the main person to stop the Moppila Rebellion in 1921. He was also the leader Vaikkom Sathyagraha. He also served as a news writer in Mathrubhumi in 1929. He also led the Salt Sathyagraha from Calicut to Payyannur. He also accompanied Swami Anandatheertha during Kalyasseri strike. He fought for many social discrimination in Kerala include untouchability and caste system. He was also a popular face in Quit India Movement and India got Independence while he was serving as KPCC president. He resigned from Congress in 1951 and became the leader of Congress Socialist Party and Kisan Masdoor Party. He resigned entirely from politics from 1955 and worked with Sarvodaya. He also regretted Padmashri from the Government of India. The life of this great leader came to an end in 6th October 1971.
