Adoor Gopalakrishnan

Adoor Gopalakrishnan is an internationally known film director from the God’s Own Country. Adoor Gopalakrishnan or Moutathu Gopalakrishnan Unnithan was born in 3rd July 1941 in a place known as Pallickal near Adoor. He was born as a son of Madhavan Unnithan and Gauri Kunjamma. He has proved his talents internationally as a director, screenwriter and film producer. Adoor Goplakrishnan popularly known as Adoor is the founder of film society in Kerala. He was also a member of Fim and Television Institute Governing Council, National Film Festival Jury etc. He was also worked as a director of National Film Development Corporation. All the films directed by him had got international attention and are selected for many international film festivals. Adoor Gopalakrishnan was also a great writer. A Malayalam book written by Adoor named ‘Cinemayude Lokam’ got the National Award for the best book in the year 1983.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Contribution to Indian Cinema

Adoor Gopalakrishnan was active in the Malayalam film industry from 1965 onwards. Malayalam Cinema experienced a sudden revolution by the entry of this great personality. Adoor’s fist film was released in 1972 in the name of Svayamvaram and the same film got the National Award for the best film in the year 1973. Adoor was also awarded the National Award for the best director of the same film in the same year. All the films he has directed have got international attentions and have got many awards. Kodiyettam, Elippathayam, Mukhamukam, Anantharam etc are some his great films. He has got British Film Institute Award for his excellent work in the film Elippathayam in 1982 and his film Mukhamukam got Fepresci Award in 1984.

He was the winner of National Award for fifteen times along with many International Awards. He was also selected for Kerala State Award for seventeen times. - 2010 - Honorary Doctorate [D.Litt] from University of Kerala
