Kozhikode, April 14 -- After conducting para-gliding and para-sailing events to promote tourism in the State, God's Own Country is now experimenting with kite-flying festival to attract more tourists to overcome the negative impacts of the global meltdown. About 70 kite-fliers, including 20 from foreign countries, will take part in the India International Kite Festival 2010 on Kappad beach in Kozhikode district

State Tourism Secretary V Venu told reporters that Gujarat was the only state in the country to host such a kite festival so far.
There would be two participants from each country besides ten teams from various parts of the country which would have five members each, taking the total number of participants to 70, said the organizers. Kappad beach is famous as the place where Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama Vasco da Gama: see Gama, Vasco da. landed here in 1498.
"This beach is already famous as a historic place. We want to add more glory to it. This place is appropriate for such a kite festival as the winds on this sea shore are favourable for flying kites," Viswan said. Besides kite flying, there would be a seafood festival and a cultural fest in the night and these would showcase the local art and culture, he said. There would be a classroom session also for all those interested in learning how to make and fly kites, he said.
Organizers said tat a kite to be flown at the festival would cost anything from Rs.25,000 upwards. The materials for making kites would be supplied free of cost, they said. There would be kites of various sizes and shapes and they would be as big as a two-storey building, they added.
