Malappuram district has a population of 3629640. Literacy as per 2001 census is put at 88.61%. Subsequently, Malappuram District was declared
100% literate along with other districts of the state; made possible by in intensive state wide literacy drive.
Four main rivers of Kerala flow through Malappuaram district. They are Chaliyar (Beypore river), Kadalundipuzha, Bharathapuzha and Tirurpuzha.

Kayals (backwaters) like Biyyamp, Veliyancode, Manur, Kodinhi etc offer fishing and navigation facilities offer facilities for fishing and navigation facilities.

Muslims constitute the majority of the population, and they are known as Mappilas. They are traditonal sunni muslims and follow the shafi school of thought.

Kozhikode International Airport and the University of Calicut are in the Malappuram district.
