When my eldest sister was at Ooty, I have spent an entire summer vacation of about 3 months with her family during my primary school studies. Those days the only mode of communication was by letter which may take weeks to reach. For urgent communication Telegram facility only is available. In those days telegrams were received with fear as it was used mainly for serious matters like death or serious illnesses etc. I do not remember how my going over to my sister was intimated to her by mother. I am not a bright person so cannot think of the probable troubles and do something about it. My mother might have attended 1st or 2nd standard classes in school. I do not know. Anyway she was a quiet and very capable lady and she had taken care of my going over to my sister so that there was a person at the bus stop when I got down from the bus to take me to my sister's house. My brother-in-law was in the police department. Those days from our place only bus facility were available, that too only on 1 or 2 days in a week and the service is liable to be cancelled without notice. I did not know of any problem. The bus to Ooty has to be boarded from a place named Pattambi which is about 5 km from my village. She had instructed one of our servants to take me to the bus stand and send me in the bus. I think, even the bus fare was paid by the servant to the conductor. I spend 3 months with my nieces and nephew. I have gone around all over Ooty and nearby town Coonoor. I think I was taken along with the sister’s family when they were going to native place. This is my first experience of going out of my village alone to a different place in a different state.
