HOW TO WRITE YOUR ENGLISH EXAMINATION CONFIDENTLY – A FEW GUIDELINES
Come March, our youngsters start running for GUIDES AND SIMPLE STUDY MATERIALS to manage their English Examinations.Taking an English Examination is as an art of its own kind. Here are a few guidelines you may follow for effective answering of FIRST YEAR and SECOND YEAR exams at the PLUS TWO and DEGREE LEVELS.
1. UNDERSTANDING YOUR OWN ENGLSH PROFICIENCY:
First of all you have to understand your own strengths and weaknesses as a student of English. It alone is the pointer to the probable parameters of your own possible performance levels at the Examinations ahead. Sometimes you may be very good at English, sometimes you may possess an average hold over the language and in specific cases you may even be very poor in English. After assessing your own proficiency or its exact state of being you have to plan well for taking the Examinations so that the impact of a poor performance will not be very disastrous.
In certain cases you may appear to be good at writing effectively even when you don't have a thorough base of Grammar or any good hold over certain usages. In some other cases you may be good at Grammar but may still be struggling to express well in the expected manner.
First of all learn to learn what you need. Spend a little time to redefine your exact needs and spend more time on bringing down the differences between what you have learnt for the entire academic year and what is likely to be written in the answer sheets during the examination.
2.UNDERSTANDING THE SYLLABUS AND THE CHOICE OPTIONS :
A student who plans to write an Examination quite effectively always prefers to go for certain restrictions in choosing the lessons included. By preferring to fix on about 60 to 75 percent of the total syllabus most of the Public Examinations can be taken satisfactorily well.
You should know how to plan a selective preparation programme quite well in advance. However, selective preparation on Grammar and General Composition items has to be avoided as far as possible.
You may skip upto 25-30 percent of the whole syllabus if you are thorough with the remaining lessons/items for study.
2.UNDERSTANDING THE PATTERN OF THE QUESTION PAPERS :
You have to answer sections the descriptive part well. But it is grammar and composition that mostly decide your satisfactory score. Be a judicious student and be hundred percent aware of the pattern of each examination so that by errors of omission or commission you may not end up with a poor score.
4.ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS UNDER DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS :
The following points must be borne in mind while answering variety questions included in various English question papers. It is a set of FIFTEEN GOLDEN RULES.
1] Spend the first five to ten minutes reading the question paper and then relax for a few minutes before you begin to take on. 2] Have a time plan for each segment/section in the question paper. 3] Remember that during the first half an hour of the examination, your speed of writing is much little and you acquire higher speed as you proceed on. In many instances the quality of your hand writing falls below the usual during the last half an hour. 4] Also remember that as you are into the mood of spirited writing your answers become well and some questions which might have earlier appeared to be hard you may answer well. 5] Always answer the questions as directed. Consideration of the word length or line length is of great importance here. Some answers need specific answers with no scope for demonstrating your language skills. Some answers demonstrate your writing skill and the questions asked have only a moderate importance with regard to its framing part.
6] Annotations and Grammar related questions require answers with utmost accuracy and acceptability. 7] Essay type or descriptive type answers need to be written with a catchy introduction and appropriate conclusion. 8] Extra questions need not be attempted as the same leads to wasting of your precious time. 9] Alternate answers [especially in Grammar] must not be given once you are sure that the first answer written is correct. It amounts to teasing the examiner. 10] Every question ought to be attempted irrespective of the fact that you may not know the exact answers sometimes. 11] Important sentences may be underlined with pencil if you feel like. You should not use sketch pens for the purpose. 12] Letters, CVs etc should not reveal your own identity. 13] Note making, report writing, précis drafting, describing a process etc should be attempted only based on the specific formats. 14] Information transfer, Role play, Vocabulary based questions etc should be attempted only after reading the questions/directions correctly. 15] Ensure that you have not left any question un answered.
A good score in English paper/s is a matter of great pride for all students. It is a reflection of your standards and your attitudes towards life as well. If you deserve a good score, why don't you plan for it?
