There is a happy news for all Mohanlal fans and for movie lovers. The most awaited Malayalam movie of the year, “Red Wine" is released today in almost all theaters across Kerala. Aren't you ready to taste the “Red Wine"? You will surely love it. “Red Wine" is a thriller under the direction of debutant director Salam Bappu, produced by Gireesh Lal under the banner of Gowri Meenakshi Movies. Salam Bappu is a long time associate of Lal Jose, the renowned director. The movie features Mohanlal, Fahad Fazil, Asif Ali, Meghana Raj, Mia Groge, Meera Nandan and Saiju Kurup in the lead roles. It is for the first time Mohanlal is joining his hands with the young stars Fahad and Asif.

The movie "Red Wine" can be categorized under suspense thrillers as it has a good element of suspense in it. It has lot of social impact as the movie talks about true friendship, love, social commitment and sacrifice. The story revolves around three men, Ratheesh, Ramesh and Anoop. Mohnalal appears as Ratheesh, Fahad Fazil as Anoop and Asif Ali as Ramesh. Fahad Fazil and Asif Ali are the two young artists widely accepted by the Malyali viewers in the recent past.

Now two of them are joining together along with the superstar Mohanlal to create wonders in the silver screen. The movie is a good entertainer and will surely attract the viewers towards it. The shooting of this movie took place in the nature gifted areas of Kozhikode and Wayanad districts of Kerala.

The title of the movie is an apt one for a suspense thriller as the process to make wine is quite lengthy and time consuming. Same way here the investigator is finding threads for an incident and that in turn leads strangers to meet together for a common purpose. “Red Wine" is a most awaited movie of the year since the release of its first trailer on 22nd December 2012.

Story line of the Malayalam movie “Red Wine"

The movie starts with the introduction of Fahad Fazil in the first scene itself. Fahad Fazil appears as Anoop, a theater artist. The other major characters are Ramesh (Asif Ali), an automobile sales executive and Ratheesh Vasudevan (Mohanlal), an investigating officer. Anoop and Ramesh are two guys with more or less opposite characters. Anoop hails from Wayanad district and is very much concerned about social issues whereas Ramesh who hails from Kozhikode is pretty much self centered. Even though Ramesh and Anoop are strangers, there is a hidden connection between them which will be revealed in the later part of the movie. An incident which takes place in between is the main twist in this movie. The investigating office, Ratheesh comes into the scene and somehow Ramesh and Anoop will meet for a common purpose. Further incidents makes the movie progress and the suspense is revealed finally.

The other leading characters Meera Nandan appears as Jasna and Mia George appears as Deepthi. Navas (Saiju Kurup) and his wife Sree Lekshmi (Anusree) are Anoop's classmates. Each and every one of the artists have put forward excellent performances which has contributed in making this movie a success. The first half of the movie is excellent when compared to the second half. In the second half, the story gets lagged and there is nothing much different from the usual climax. Moreover the first half gives lot of expectations to the viewers which cannot be fulfilled completely in the second half. But altogether it is a good movie.

Review of the Malayalam movie “Red Wine"

The latest Malayalam movie "Red Wine" is an average suspense thriller which fails to maintain the suspense throughout the movie until the climax. The first half of the movie is excellent. Up to interval the movie did gain lot of applause but after that the energy level has decreased a bit. Some scenes here and there are quite usual and the script is pretty ordinary and that is the main drawback of this movie.

The movie basically revolves around a communist party activist Anoop, who gets killed in mysterious circumstances. Ratheesh Vasudevan, the ACP of Kozhikode district is in charge of the investigation. The movie progresses by narrating the past of Anoop, a true communist and with the investigation procedures. The film has some new and fresh content in it which attracts the viewers in the first half but the climax was even more worse than expected. Even the beginning of the second half is good but later on the story sticks on to an emotional side. The investigating officer who was not at all emotional till that point will suddenly turn emotional and that will influence his decisions. In short this shifts the movie from a thriller to an emotional one.

Another problem with the film is that there are many loose ends especially about Anoop's story. This irritates the audience. Also the accident sequence involving Asif Ali was poorly executed. Secondly, the role of Mohanlal was quite a common one as a police officer, there was nothing special in his appearance. Fahad Fazil's character is very close to the common man and he has done his role very well. On the other side Asif Ali could not do much as Rameshan. That character demanded little more of physical strength and maturity which Asif lacks. Yet another impressive character was T.G Ravi's. The characters played by Meghna Raj and debutant Maria John have created some unwanted complexities in the minds of the audience.

"Red Wine" is the directorial debut of Salam Palappetty, a promising director indeed but he has to improve a lot as this movie had more or less the usual content in it. The cinematography was poor but the editing part was good. The soundtracks under the music direction of Biji Bal was able to create an impact on the viewers. On the whole "Red Wine" is an average watchable movie.

SPK Rating : 6.5/10
SPK Verdict : An average thriller
