The reason generally quoted for the highest female population in Kerala is that a good majority of men work outside the State, especially in Gulf countries, who are not having the capacity (low income group) to take their family with them. another reason is the education level of Keralites. They are not against having female births.

Sex Ratio of Kerala, 1058 female for 1000 males, have, perhaps encouraged the State Government to accept the 50% reservation policy in the elections to the Local Self Government Institutions (Panchayats, Municipalities, etc.). This means 50% of seats will be reserved for women in the next general election to these institutions. At present it is only 33%. Now the Parliament is enacting the law to introduce 33% reservation for women in the elections to State Assemblies and Loksabha.
