An amazing fruit for your healthy body – Tomato
Tomato is a typically red, edible fruit. Tomato is a native of South America. It is loaded with food minerals and vitamins. The fruit is soft, succulent, berry red or yellow in colour, containing many small seeds surrounded by a jelly-like pulp. There are more health benefits eating tomato than the scientific community is able to print, at least yet. Tomatoes are equally as nutritious fresh as they are in other variable forms. It is an important protective food. It is used raw in salads, served as a cooked vegetable, and used as an ingredient of various prepared dishes and pickles.
The red colour of tomato is due to a red pigment called lycopene which is a powerful anti oxidant that can fight cancer cells. Lycopene neutralizes free radicals that can damage cells in the body. Studies have revealed that lycopene is stronger than another well known antioxidant, beta-carotene. Studies done in Italy have found that those who consume more than 7 servings of raw tomatoes lower the risk of developing rectal colon or stomach cancers by 60 percent. Tomatoes also lower the risk of developing prostrate cancer. Lycopene is a powerful inhibitor of lung, breast and endometrial cancer cells. Lycopene can help older people stay active longer.

A large consumption of tomato improves skin texture and colour. Tomato juice keeps the blood stream alkaline, and thus helps to resist diseases. Tomato is a good blood purifier. Tomatoes protect liver from cirrhosis and also help to dissolve Gall Bladder stones. Tomatoes stimulate torpid liver and are very good for dyspensia, diarrhoea and dysentery. VitaminC of tomato is not destroyed by heat so it is practically valuable for all kinds of stomach and liver troubles. It is purely a stomach and liver tonic. Tomatoes are usually effective in heartburn and indigestion. Tomato taken with garlic and Musambi (Lime juice) is good for summer diarrhoea. Tomato removes constipation. It is easily digestible and so it is recommended as a good diet for invalids especially fevers, diabetes and after long fast. Tomato helps to reduce blood cholesterol and thus protects heart from diseases. Tomatoes are natural antiseptic and make the body resistant to diseases.
Tomato contains Vitamin K. So it helps to prevent Hemorrhages. Being a rich source of Vitamin A tomatoes are a good preventive against eye troubles. Tomato is a rich source of Vitamin C (23 mg per 100gm). As a rich source of Vitamin C, it is very valuable in Scurvy. Half ripe tomatoes are very useful in hot summer months as it prevents sun-stroke or heat stroke.
Tomatoes are very rich, in Iron (6mg per 100gm) and potash salts (360mg per 100gm). It also contains Calcium (11mg per 100gm), Phosphorous (27mg per 100gm), and Vitamin B (0.6mg per 100gm) and small amount of protein. Tomato is a good nervine tonic. It is good for all sorts of nerve disorders. Being a source of Iron it is good diet for anaemic patients. It strengthens teeth.
When choosing your tomatoes, be sure to pick with the most brilliant shades of red. High amount of lycopene and beta-carotene will be there in bright shades of red tomatoes. Lycopene is located in the cell wall of tomato, so by cooking it in a bit of oil, the healing compound is more fully released. Cooking tomato in olive oil helps the body to absorb the lycopene better. Tomatoes don't lose any of their high nutritional values in the high heat processing. Canned tomatoes and tomato sauce are both just as viable and beneficial as fresh tomatoes.

However only 10% of urinary oxalate is coming from indigested products.90% of urinary oxalate comes from body's own formation.Studies have proved that it is a common myth that intake of tomatoes increases the risk of kidney stones in a person.The truth is that intake of tomatoes with green vegetables is good for preventing kidney stones.To some extent it is good for curing kidney stones.
In India Doctors advice patients who have kidney stones to cut down the consumption of tomatoes.It all depends on the type of stones.Consuming too much oxalate or uric acid,excess vitamin C,Vitamin D,certain medications,metabolic diseases and drinking less fluids may lead to renal stone formation.The most important thing is to drink plenty of water every day.
Tomato is "Poor man's Apple".It won't harm your body.
