Makaravilakku Festival- A Divine Ecstasy

Makaravilakku is one of the famous devotee season in India in the sacred groves of Sabarimala. Devotees of Ayyappa from different parts of the country always come to Sabarimala for being part of this 41 day pilgrimage. Makarajyothi marks the end of Makaravilakku season. It is actually a celestial star which appears on the eastern horizons of Sabarimala. The multitude of people who are coming to see the Makarajyothi is exponentially increasing over the years and this itself shows the greatness of this event.

Importance of Makarajyothi

There is always a throng of pilgrims to pilgrims to see this divine bliss. They believe that, watching this celestial star will be a good sign and will bring good lucks in their life. Makarajyothi. The pilgrims used to fill up in Sabarimala in these days and even occupying the near by hills and grass lands.

Before entering to Makarajyothi, the idol of Ayyappa is decorated with 'Thiruvabharanam' (Sacred Ornaments) and being carried to Sabarimala from the Panthalam palace with a great procession. After that there will be Deeparadhana in the temples. As soon as Deeparadhana take place each and every devotee eyes will be focusing on the eastern horizon to see that divine celestial star in the name of Makarajyothi.

Informations for the devotees

- As a part of Makarivilakku festival 2011, Samkrama Pooja will be held on 6.45 pm in 14th January evening
- Deeparadhan will starts along with the decorated Ayyappa Idol at 7.00 pm and the Makarajyothi will appear on Ponnambalamettu during that time.
- Devotees are also provided 1000 buses by the authorites for their return after their 41 days of pilgrimage. 650 buses are available for long route travel.
- Devotees can also have a sacred bath in Pampa river on the next morning.
