Are film awards biased?

An insight about how award functions work in Bollywood and India in general.

Do you agree that all the bollywood awards in India go to the most deserving candidates every year? In my view, I do not believe that this is true. Is it that the jury of such awards do not know how to choose the right actors/actresses as the winners or is it because it is all rigged? Let me ask you all something- How many of you think that Katrina Kaif is the best actress that Bollywood has got at the moment? I'm sure majority of the audience out there will vouch that she is the best. But let me reframe the question in a more clear way - Without considering the beauty factor alone, who do you think really possesses the talent to act? Do you still think that it is Katrina? She has won a Rajiv Gandhi National Award in 2009 for her role and acting in the film Rajneeti. Did she really deserve this award? Was her acting really that great that she was worthy of such a high merit? Katrina herself says that she doesn't deserve a National award. Is beauty the only thing that is needed to become one of the top actresses in Bollywood? What about real talents like Vidya Balan, Konkona Sen and Nandita Das? These gifted actresses never seem to grab the awards anywhere? The more clothes you shed and the more you whitewash your face with make-up, the more you are recognized as the best that the film industry has ever seen!

If we take the case of actors, it's a known fact that Shah Rukh Khan undoubtedly wins the Filmfare Awards (which is considered like the Oscars of the West) almost every year. Talented actors like Ajay Devgan and Irfan Khan never win this title because they are not as handsome nor famous as the 3 Khans! Isnt it a joke that Saif Ali Khan was honored lately with the Padmashree award for his 'contribution' to cinema? Please note that I am not saying that Saif Ali Khan or any of these awarded people are not good in acting. What I mean to say is that they are not so good enough to win such prestigious awards which make an impact worldwide.

Let's take the case of some of the main Bollywood awards

In the Apsara awards 2010, Shah Rukh Khan won the best actor title for his film Rab ne bana di jodi. But isn't is amusing that this film was actually released in the year 2008?

For Stardust awards 2010, Katrina Kaif won the best actress title for her films Newyork and Ajab prem ki ghazab kahani. I agree that she's a 'beautiful' actress and is improving a lot in her Hindi diction, but has she genuinely reached the status of a best actress level yet? The film 'Wake up Sid' was a huge hit during the year but its actress, Konkona Sen was not even nominated for the best actress award! Was this because she's not as beautiful as Katrina Kaif or Aishwarya Rai? Doesn't her acting talent mean anything to the film industry?

The Star Screen Awards best actress award was given to Vidya Balan and she definitely deserved it but one cant deny the fact that this could be because the Star Screen Awards is run by the Indian Express Group which whom the Bachchans have a lot of influence.

I am sure that by now the readers would have got my point. I am sure that many people will favor my view and many more will be against my view too, especially the die-hard fans of Katrina Kaif and Shah Rukh Khan. Frankly the fact is that I myself am a big fan of Katrina's beauty but as far as the best actress is concerned, she does not have the talent to attain that title. Needless to say, it means that I don't think she deserved the National award too.
