Leela deals with the theme of sexual anarchy in which Ranjith's assistant Sankar Ramakrishnan makes his debut as hero. Ann Agustine is the heroine. "The never ending play" - that is the tag line of the movie Leela. The film depicts he sexual mannerisms and characteristics of modern day individuals. The theme is something that is very less discussed and needs depiction. Ranjith after a successful venture in Indian Rupee is back to what he does best.
The film Leela is based on the short story written by R. Unni for Mathrubhoomi weekly. The concept of the story interested Ranjith and he called upon the script writer Shankar Ramakrishnan to play the hero in the film. Shankar Ramakrishan had earlier directed the film island express in the movie combination Kerala Cafe compiled by Ranjith.
The title role for the character Leela was first presented to Mamtha Mohandas.Later Ann Augustine walked in to the role. Ann Augustine had debuted with the Lal Jose film Elsamma Enna Aankutty which had her playing a strong character. After that film she was deprived of sensible roles where she could have performed better. Now Ranjith has called for her to do the film Leela which will be something that Malayalam film viewers have never seen in Malayaam before.
Another surprise that is on th cards is that the music for the film will be composed by veteran director ShyamaPrasad. The movie will be produced by capitol theatre and is expected to hit the screens in march 2012. It had been a long time since these two veteran actors acted together in a film. Let us hopes that this film Leela will pave a path for the comeback of actor Thilakan to Malayalam film indutry.
Ranjith has become one of the most sought after directors in Malayalam after his back to back successes with Pranchiyettan And The Saint, Indian Rupee and Palerimanikyam Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Kadha. What makes his films apart from other directors is his choice of the themes which is being portrayed along with being able to mingle the elements of commercial success. The film Leela is just a continuation of what this director had started some time back.
The film camera will be done by Venu and the film will make the turn of the combination of Nedumudi Venu and Thilakan after a long time in Malayalam cinema. The shooting for the movie wil be done in various locations of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kuttanad and Wayanad.
