Co-operative movements in the country

Co-operative movement in India has completed hundred years. In almost all villages co-operative societies are functioning. About six lakh such societies with a membership of about 24 crores engage in various welfare and productive sectors. Thousands are employed in these sectors. World famous Dairy society of Gujarat, Sugar Societies of Maharashtra, Fertilizer societies of Haryana, etc. are clear examples of success.
The co-operative movement in Kerala is the strongest among those in all other States.About 14,000 societies function here employing more than one lakh people. The co-operative Banks in Kerala function just like any other commercial bank. There are Medical Colleges and other colleges running under the co-operative sector.

Immediately after independence the leaders of our country wanted a mixed economy type of development. In this there will be participation of the private corporates, the public sector or the Government sector and the co-operative movement or the people's movement for the progress and development of the country.

Then came the next phase. In this phase the above idea slightly changed and the there was a heavy leaning for private of both national and global giants to come to the fore at the cost of public sector and the co-operative sector. In fact there was a concerted effort in a subtle manner from the Governments of all parties without exception, the executives of the institutions and the employees' unions and finally the employees themselves cutting at the root of the culture mainly of public sector and to a great extent f the co-operative sector.

In spite of the attitude of all the in a very small way some of the public sector undertakings are still trying to show to the world that the public sector can deliver the goods if proper climate on level play basis is provided. As for the co-operative sector while a majority in mist of the states have gone into disrepute there are still the shining examples of the white revolution symbol of the milk co-operative federations and a few others standing out. Similarly there are very few states and Kerala being one of them where the cooperative movement is still holding on. Let us hope that the remaining good ones will not be stifled out.

With Regards
