Neyyattinkara By Election win strengthens UDF in the Assembly

Kerala's ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) and Congress candidate R. Selvaraj won the by-election from the Neyyattinkara Assembly constituency with a margin of 6334 votes.R. Selvaraj(Congress) bagged 52528 votes against his nearest rival and Left Democratic Front candidate F Lawrence,who secured by 46194 votes.BJP candidate and Former Union Minister O Rajagopal ended up a distant third with 30507 votes.

Neyyattinkara by-election result has strengthened the seat position of the UDF (United Democratic Front) Government from 72 to 73 in the Assembly.While the strength of the Opposition LDF (Left Democratic Front) went down to 67 members in the 140-member House.

The bypoll in Neyyattinkara Assembly constituency was necessitated by resignation of the assembly membership and party membership by R. Selvaraj (CPI-M), who won the Neyyattinkara Assembly seat in 2011 assembly election as an LDF candidate.He had resigned from the CPI-M and to join Congress.

Polling in the Neyyattinkara Assembly constituency took place on June 2, 2012 with a 80.1 percent of the electorate voted.
