On March 8th several functions were arranged through out Kerala as part of the celebration of International Women's Day.

This year more people came forward to participate in celebrations. There were meetings, seminars, discussions, entertainments, painting exhibitions, etc. This indicate that more people are getting aware of the issues faced by women in our society these days.

The idea of the celebration is to convey the message to the public and thereby reduce the number of mishandling and attacks towards women.

I could attend a discussion on this day, in which about sixty people participated, more than 15 of them were women. Discussions were there on various issues mainly related to family affairs. In every family how the couple run the house, what is the amount of contribution from both, whether the husband share the household duties with wife, all these were discussed. Most of the participants were stating that they were helping their wives whenever they are at home.
Regarding the use of gold ornaments also there was discussion. When ladies go around wearing ornaments, it attracts certain unsocial elements and lead to even attacks from them. Thus several issues came for discussion.
