    Present attitude of people

Are the people becoming more and more self-centred these days ? If so, has the education system got something to do with it?

Sir: You are very much correct in observing that people in Kerala are mostly self-centered. This is a new development, started in 2000. Children of same parents are self centered and that is why, immediately after marriage, they move to a lonely house and form a micro family. This is very dangerous trend in society. The strength lies in macro family, living together under one roof with available facilities. This surely helps them to discuss all issues, irrespective of its nature and find a solution from them. Now a days, there is hardly any scope for such a situation. It is due to this situation that the crime level and suicide attempts are on an increase in our State.

Its natural that attitude of people do change when the time changes. Gone are the days when the united families use to be at the helm of any family. Now as soon as the boy gets married , the new bride try to avoid the inlaws and press her husband to come out of joint family. Thus the boy succumbs to the urge of wife and throws all morals to the wind.

These responses are welcome.I hope more responses, analytical in nature, will follow.

Nucleus families are very often sited as one of the reasons for developing this state of mind. But the same is the resultant of the economic system. Agriculture related living was behind the joint family st up, which helped children to grow without selfishness. They learned sharing everything.

But when it came to small family units, there developed a situation where the children do not get a chance to share. Under these situations the parents should take initiative to get more and more mixing with relatives and neighbours. So the children can understand what is joint living.

Parents also should make social contacts by way of participating in some social groups,at least Residential Associations. That will help the children to get an exposure.

In the present Kerala, people are self oriented. They are concerned about them self, their family, their children and their benefits. But they forgets about their social commitments. Present kerala family shrinks to the four walls of their yard. They are not even concerned about the people, living near by. Some people are unaware of which people live near by, even after many years. This is a very dangerous condition. These people should understand that, if anything happens, there wont be anyone to help them...Secondly, the children are dragged into a high competitive world with great pressure and study oriented culture even from LKG!!! This is too bad, In the precious time of growth, they are not allowed to mingle with others, enjoy playing with them, enjoy the beauty of nature...But sadly they are put on a high pressure to top the studies and overtake the fellow students. This can cause major mental and physical problems, growth disabilities and social problems to these growing children...
So there should be strict vigilance. The self and self benefit oriented culture of globalized world should be restricted. Otherways it should be killing our generations...
