First Super Star of Malayalam CinemaThere was an all time super Star in Malayalam cinema. That is Prem Nazir. Prem Nazir's presence was in the Malayalam for long 35 years. His career as an actor was started in 1952 in the famous film "MARUMAKAL" and ended with "DHWANI" in January 1989. In the span of 35 years, he has acted in as many as 1000 films incl. other languages like Tamil. His real name was Abdul Khaddar born in a small village called Chirayinkeezh in Trivandrum district. He was never thought of becoming an actor forget about a super stardom in Malayalam. The screen name – PREM NAZIR – was in fact, put by another legend of Malayalam film Shri Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair. Along with the films he has acted, his name also clicked and stayed for decades in the minds of Malayalees. During 1970 – 80s was the peak time for Prem Nazir. In some years, he has acted in more than 35 films in a year. An actor in the present time cannot even dream of in any language in India. He was never bothered about the number of films he has acted in his career. Certain characters were made only for Prem Nazir and Prem Nazir only. Though belated, in 1983 the country bestowed him with the highest honours 'PADMABHUSHAN' & PADMASHREE for his contribution to Malayalam Cinema.
Critics of Prem Nazir
Always there was controversies reg. Shri Prem Nazir's acting talent. In Malayalam no one else has been criticized the way Shri Nazir was criticized by his opponents (?) He was the Romeo of Malayalees. Eighty five Heroines for ONE PREM NAZIR. That too more than 107 films with a single heroine (Remember Sheela). In 1979 out of 130 films released in Malayalam, 39 films were released Shri Prem Nazir as hero.in different banners and different directors. He was never a botheration to any producer or director. If a film is produced with Nazir as hero, the producer's investment in the project was guaranteed.
He was born in 1926 April 7 in a mainstream and established muslin family. His father was A. Shahul Hameed a strong orthodox Muslim in Chirayinkizhu in Thiruvanamthapuram district and mother Asuma Beevi. He was survived with a son (Shahanwas - also an actor - and three daughters) Nazi's association in acting was quite unexpected. It was his brother's (Perm Naas - died in a train accident in Chennai few years back) chance to act in a Malayalam film directed S.K. Chari. Incidentally, Nazir had to accompany Nawaz to the studio. The director thought that Nizir would be more suitable for the role and the role was given to Nazir. It was just a starting of Nazir's carrier in the Malayalm film. How many films!!! How many roles!!
He is considered as one of the all time superstars in Malayalam cinema. He is referred to as Nithya Haritha Nayakan (Ever green hero). Prem Nazir holds two Guinness records; one for playing opposite the same heroine (107 films with Sheela) and the other for the lead role in over 700 films. In the last part of his life, he has tried his presence in Kerala politics and joined in Indian National Congress with the advice of Late Shri K. Karunakaran, but never aspired any position or place in politics. However, his attempt in politics was an absolute failure.
Prem Nazir will be remembered by Malayalees for generations. There is no death for Shri Nazir. Always he will be in the mind and heart of each and every Malayalee.
