After pre degree course delinked from colleges, an addition of 2 years was added to the school life. As the plus two course play an important role in the life of each student, more respect would be given while taking the exam. As per the National Education Policy of 1986, state government has delinked Pre-degree Courses from colleges and introduced 10+2 system in the High Schools of Kerala.

The Kerala Higher Secondary Department was formed in 1990 and the course was initially introduced in 31 selected Government high schools. In 2000-2001, the de-linking process of Pre-degree courses from colleges was completed adding the course to 1907 Higher Secondary Schools functioning in the State. With 760 in government sector, 686 in aided sector and 461 in unaided sector, this system offers Science, Humanities and Commerce stream courses to 6.5 lakhs student.

The department aims high focusing on the main objective to impart best quality higher education to the students of the State who complete their SSLC/equivalent level education. After completing the course students are free to choose their career.
