Chicken Piralan in Kerala – Ingredients and Preparation Method

Chicken Piralan is light lime dish of Kerala. You can take this dish with kappa, idiappam etc.

Ingredients of Chicken Piralan


• Chicken – ½ kg

For Marination

• Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
• Pepper Powder – ½ tsp
• Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
• Grated ginger & garlic – 1 tsp, each
• Salt

For Masala

• Pearl onion – 1 cup, sliced (measured before slicing)
• Onion – 4 medium, sliced finely
• Grated ginger & garlic – ½ -3/4 tbsp, each
• Red Chilli powder – 1½ tsp
• Pepper powder – ½ tsp
• Coriander powder – ½ – ¾ tbsp
• Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
• Fennel powder (perumjeerakam podi) – ½ tsp
• Garam Masala – ½ tsp
• Meat masala – 1 tsp ( I used Eastern)
• Tomato – 1 medium – big, sliced
• Potato – 1, cubed (refer notes)
• Water – 1 cup
• Salt
• Coconut oil/ghee
• Curry leaves


Preparation Method for Chicken Piralan


Step 1:
Take a cleaned chicken and cut it into some pieces.

Step 2:
Take a pan pour little oil in it. Then, heat the oil in a pan and next add some sliced pearl onions.

Step 3:
You should cook it till it gets colour changes slightly. Again add thinly sliced onions and Cook till it turns dark brown colour.

Step 4:
Then crush the ginger and garlic to make a paste. Now add that paste and cook for about 2-3 minutes till the fragrance.

Step 5:
Include all masala powders. Fry well till oils starts appearing.

Step 6:
Add sliced tomato, salt, curry leaves and mix well. After the tomato boil softly, once again add cubed potato and marinated chicken pieces. Mixed it well, pour some water and cook for 5 minutes. It will boil.

Step 7:
Minimize the burn and closed the pan with lid. Cook it till the chicken is boiling.

Step 8:
Serve hot with pulao, ghee rice, fried rice etc.
