Sreenivasan – A storyteller with a difference

Sreenivasan is known for his rich contribution in the field of Indian Cinema. He is an actor, scriptwriter, director, and producer. As a writer and an actor, he has cooperated with directors such as Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad, and Kamal. Personal Life


The actor Sreenivasan was born in a small village near Thalassery in the Kannur district of Kerala. During his early years, he had his formal education in the Government High School, Kathiroor. Later on, he finished his bachelor's degree in Economics from Pazhassi Raja N.S.S. College, Mattannur. Right from the childhood, he was interested in the celluloid medium. Hence to further his interest, he got a diploma in film acting from the Madras Film Institute in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His son Vineeth Sreenivasan is a lyricist, singer, director, and actor.

Career as an Artist


The ace artist Sreenivasan entered the film fraternity in the year 1977, when he was given an offer by P.A. Backer to act in his movie. Later, he was given a role in another film Mela. This movie was directed by A. Prabhakaran who had previously worked as the Vice Principal in the Madras Film Institute. After acting in a few more films, he became confident about the scripts used in films. Hence, he decided to script his own films. Thus he wrote the script for his first film "Odaruthammava Aalariyam" in the year 1984. Subsequent to the success of his first film in which he acted and scripted, he ventured into the film direction. As a result of this move, he mustered enough courage to script and act in more movies. As a result of this move, he wrote and acted in movies such as Gandhinagar Second Street, Varavelpu, Pattanapravesham, Akkare, Akkare, Akkare, and Nadodikattu. The success of Nadodikattu gave the courage to him to make its sequels as well. He made his directorial debut through the films Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala. Recently, his work as an actor in the movies Athmakada and the Outsider was praised by his ardent critics.

His stories in films like Sandesham, Vellanakalude Nadu, and Varavelpu portrayed the states of affair in the politics of Kerala in a satirical manner. The stories of these films gave much needed insight into the working of democracy in the main political parties and unions of the state. In another film Arabikatha, he depicted the life of a true communist who fights for the survival in the party forums. As a comedy artist, his works in Aram + Aram = Kinnaram, Mazhapeyyunnu Madalam Kottunnu, Chitram, Nagarangalil Chennu Raparkam, Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu, etc. deserve the special mention. In another film Gulf Motors, he talks about the plight of a Gulf returnee who wants to start a business. The film further narrates how the establishment of a transport business by the entrepreneur backfires in the face of the opposition from the Employee Unions.

Awards and Recognitions


In the span of 36 years, his works were recognized by various agencies in the country. The awards were for his contribution to various departments of film industry. They are described below.

  1. National Film Awards: In 1999, his directorial venture Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala bagged the national award for the best film on other social issues.

  2. State Film Awards: The films either scripted or directed by Sreenivasan won film awards at the state level seven times. On one occasion, his film Thakarachenda impressed the jury so much that it was given the special jury award. This happened in the year 2006. The films include Katha Parayumbol, Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, Mazhayethum Munpe, Sandesham, and Vadakkunokkiyanthram.

  3. Asianet Film Awards: He bagged best actor award for his performance in Udayananu Tharam. For the same movie, he got another award for best script writing. He also got supporting actor award for his performances in Makante Achan and Passenger movies. His directorial ventures such as Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala and Kada Parayumbol bagged best film awards. For the artistic value of the film Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, he got the award for the best director.

  4. Other Awards: In the year 2010, an entertainment channel Asiavision awarded him the Asiavision Movie Award to him for his lifetime achievement in the field of cinema. He was also presented with the Bahadur Award for his contribution to Malayalam film industry.
