Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan is a renowned Congress leader from Central Kerala. He is currently the Cabinet Minister in charge of Home Affairs in the Ommen Chandy ministry. He is also holding the additional charge of Vigilance Ministry in the current dispensation. Before becoming the Home Minister of the state, Mr. Radhakrishnan held various positions at the party level, including those of KSU and youth wings of the Congress party. At present, he is the President of the Kerala State Transport Workers Union and the Kerala Financial Enterprises Officers' Club. Previously, he was a Senate member of the Kerala University and Syndicate Member of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT).
Early Life and Education
Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was born on December 26, 1949 in a place called Thiruvanchoor in Kottayam district of the Central Kerala. His parents were K. P. Parameshwaran Pillai and M.G. Gaurikutty Amma. He had his formal education in his hometown itself. Later, he completed Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB) from a reputed college in Kottayam. He is married to Lalithambika. In their marriage, they have two sons and one daughter. His sons are Dr. Anupam Radhakrishnan and Arjun Radhakrishnan. His daughter's name is Athira Radhakrishnan.
Early Political Life
Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan entered into the public space of the state through his activity in Balajanasakhyam. As a young activist of Balajanasakhyam, his work was noticed by the student leaders of Kerala Students Union (KSU). As a result of this, he was enrolled as the active member of KSU. Slowly, he rose through the hierarchy of the organization to become its leader. In 1967, he was the General Secretary of Baselios College Union. In the same year, he was elected as the President of Baselios College Union. In recognition of his services in KSU, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was initiated into other youth wings of the Congress party. From that point onwards, he never looked back, and he started to occupy various positions in different youth wing organizations of the Congress party. In 1966, he was the President of All India Balajanasakhyam. Mr. Radhakrishan became the President of the KSU in 1969 and the General Secretary of the Youth Congress in 1978. Later in 1982, he became the President of the Youth Congress.
Political Career in the Congress Party
After gaining sufficient experience in politics at the youth wing level, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan successfully moved to the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) as its member. Through his dedicated party activity, he rose through the rank and file of the party to become its General Secretary in 1984. He remained in that post for over 17 years. In 2011, he became the Chief Whip of the opposition in the 12th State Legislative Assembly. When he was with the party's youth wing organization, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was elected to the Kerala University Union as its member, General Secretary and President. He was also selected as the Syndicate member of CUSAT. While he was working as the General Secretary of the KPCC, his work was scrutinized and appreciated by the high command of the party. So, he was elevated to the national level as the member of All India Congress Committee (AICC). Moreover, he was nominated to the Election Committee of KPCC to carefully scrutinize the antecedents of the party members and prepare the list of probable candidates for contesting in general elections.
Stint as Legislative Assembly Member
After successfully laying the groundwork in public life, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan decided to participate in the general election in the state. He was given the party ticket to contest from Adoor Constituency. So in 1991, he successfully fought in the general election to become the Member of the State Legislative Assembly for the first time. In subsequent elections of the years 1996 and 2001, he successfully fought and retained his seat in the State Assembly.
While he was serving as the Member of the State Legislative Assembly for the third time, he was given the Cabinet Berth in the Oommen Chandy ministry in 2004. At that point in time, he was given the charge of Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Ministries. After carefully looking at the performance of the minister for one year, he was given the additional responsibility of looking after Forests and Health Ministries. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan successfully looked after the Forest Ministry from February 9, 2005 to January 3, 2006.
Currently, he is the Minister in charge of Home Affairs, with additional charge of Vigilance Department. In the current stint as the minister in Oommen Chandy ministry, he has been closely monitored by the electronic media of the state in connection with the Solar cheating case and smuggling of gold through the airports of the state. At times, he drew criticism for inappropriate handling of these issues. At present, he is also the President of the Kerala State Transport Workers Union and the Kerala Financial Enterprises Officers' Club.
Thiruvanchoor Radharkrishnan is a successful politician in the political space of the state. He rose from the humble beginning as the worker of Balajanasakhyam and the youth wings of the Congress party in the state. He has also successfully represented the people of his constituencies in the State Legislative Assembly. He is currently a cabinet minister in the Oommen Chandy ministry. In the current stint, Mr. Radhakrishnan has been given the mantle of looking after the Home Affairs and Vigilance ministries of the state. Prior to this, he had held various party positions successfully. He has also successfully represented the Congress party in other organizations.
