Location

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is located in Kothamangalam Thaluk of Eranakulam district on the northern bank of Periyar river. It is at a height of 45-325m above sea level.It is located 13km north-east of kothamangalam along the Pooyamkutty road in Njayappilli peak.Thattekkad is a home for very rarest species of birds.

History of Thattekkad bird sanctuary

The place was once a rubber plantation and due to the special existance of wildlife, Thattekkad was declared as a wild life sanctuary in August 27 1983. It was Kerala's first officially recognised wild life sanctuary. The world famous ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali was the chief architect of this sancturay, so it is also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.

Climate in Thattekkad bird sanctuary

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary have a tropical climate with annual rainfall of about 3000mm and a pleasant weather through out the year. Monsoon starts here in the month of May-July, and the places are inaccessible during this season. So tourists kindly don't visit here during May-July. The best time to visit is September onwards.

Flora: The Sanctuary is located near the dense tropical evergreen, deciduous forests and beautiful grasslands. The mix of these natural beauties make it a perfect place for tourists. It also have some plantations like teak, mahagony and some beautiful flowers.
Fauna: The main attraction of Thattekkad is the birds of different species including some exclusive migratory birds. Some of the rarest birds found here are Malabar Grey Hornbill, Bee-eaters, Crimson throated Barbets etc. Among the animals Elephants are the major visitors. Leopard, bear, Python, Cobra are also seen.

is the Birding trips. Thattekkad is a popular bird watching destination. We can ride over the elephant's back with an elephant trainer to view some of the rarest birds here. Jeeps and Vans are also available for traveling.
