There are many colleges in our country providing education in maritime field. The jobs available in ships depends on ones qualification. Broadly we can classify into 3 sections, one is the Deck department where we have to do the navigation of the ship. It is purely a white collared job. For this we have to do 3 year degree program or 1 year diploma course (diploma in nautical science). The next is Engine Department where we are engaged to the maintenance of the main propulsion engine and auxiliary machineries. For this one has to do 4 year marine engineering course in a college affiliated by DG shipping of India. This affiliation has nothing to do with AICTE approval. Those who have completed Mechanical engineering can also apply for the same job by doing 1 year pre-sea training in a DG shipping approved college. The third group consists of crew members like fitter, oiler, steward, bosun. cheff etc..... For this also one has to do approved courses provided by DG shipping.
