Aranmula is located at about 128 kilometers from Kerala on the banks of the river Pampa in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. Aranmula has the distinction of being chosen as one of the tourist destinations by the Union Government of India. Aranmula has also been included in the joint initiative Cultural tourism program by the UNDP, United Nations Development Program and the Tourism ministry of the Union Government of India.

Aranmula Palace / Kottaram at Aranmula


Aranmula Palace, was also known as Aranmula Vadekke Kottaram or the Aranmula Kottaram. Aranmula Kottaram is an ancient palace which was built 200 years ago. Aranmula is located in the Pathanamthitta district of the state of Kerala in India. There are many places to visit in the nearby area of Aranmula as well as the very famous snake boat race is held here.

About the Parthasarathy Tempe at Aranmula


Aranmula Parthasarathi Temple is an ancient temple which is believed to be first built at Nilackal by Arjuna one of the five Pandava princes. Lord Krishna was the Parthasarathy ( Charioteer ) for Arjuna in the 18 days war of Hasthinapura. Legend has it that Arjuna built this temple near Sabarimala and later the idol was brought to Aranmula in the raft made of six bamboos ( which means Aranmula, that is aaru is six and mula is Bamboo in malayalam).

This Parthasarathy temple is located on the left bank of the Pampa river and from here the Thiruvabharana for Lord Ayyappa during the Makara vilakku festival is taken after an halt to sabarimala. This Kosha yatra starts from Pandhalam and reaches Sabarimala on the Makara sankranthi day just in time for the Lord to adorn the jewels which have been kept for Prince Manikanta, another name for Lord Ayyappa, at his native place. While coming to Sabari mala and on return to pandhalam the Kosha Yatra stays at Aranmula Kottaram and at the temple. After offering prayers at the Parthasarathy temple the next day the Kosha Yatra reaches the destination.

Snakeboat race at the Aranmula


Aranmula Uthrattathi ia the festival of the installation of the idol in the temple. This festival falls on the Uthrattathi star, just after the end of Onam festival. Onam festival is celebrated through out the state of Kerala in September and on the same day the Aranmula Snake boat race is held. Snake boats from 39 karas from Chennthala in the west to Ranni in the east participate in the boat race called in malayalam as the vallamkali. After the boat race there is a feast in the bAranmula Parthasarathy temple in which anyone and everyone can participate.

Pulikunnumala Mahadeva Temple


Pulikkunnumala Mahadeva Temple is a very ancient temple in Aranmula and is also connected with Pandavas. This Mahadeva Temple is located on the top of a beautiful hill at about 4 kilometers from Aranmula. You can see Aranmula Parthasarathy kshetra Kodimaram or the temple pole from the Mahadeva Temple.
It is said that Pandavas used to visit the temple regularly and has offered Poojs. Now Temple is under the Kshtra samrakshana samithy

How to Reach Aranmula Village


If you are travelling by air you can reach either Thiruvananthapuram or Kochi international airports and from there you can either get hired vehicles or take bus transport to reach the Aranmula Palace. Thiruvananthapuram airport is placed at about 110 kilometers away and the Kochi international airport is placed 120 kilometers away from Aranmula.
Chengannur will be the nearest railway station and is about 25 kilometers from the village Aranmula. you can get hired vehicles as well as bus es to reach Aranmula
