Navodaya Vidyalaya is a unique concept introduced in the school education in India and elsewhere and JNV Malappuram was established in the year 1988. Free education is given to all selected students including their books, uniforms, stationary and food.

Organizational Structure


Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti is an autonomous organization under the ministry of HRD, department of secondary and higher education runs this vidyalaya. The Minister of HRD is the Chairman of the Samiti and the Minister of State, HRD (education), is the Vice Chairman. The commissioner of NVS is the executive head of the administrative pyramid who executes the policies laid down by the samiti's Executive Committee and District Magistrate is the Chairperson of the VMC.

Establishment of Vidyalaya


Navodaya Vidyalaya is a unique concept introduced in the school education in India and elsewhere and JNV Malappuram was established in the year 1988 with 78 students who were admitted in class VI as envisaged by the national policy of education 1986 (one JNV in each district of the country). Its significance lies in the selection of talented rural children as the target group and the attempt to provide them with the quality education comparable to the best in the residential school system. The founding fathers of the system felt that the children with special talent or aptitude should be provided opportunities to proceed at a faster pace by making good quality education available to them irrespective of their capacity to pay for it. Accordingly, JNV Oorakam has got students from 14 different blocks of the district.

Admission

Admission to class VI is on the basis of JNVST (Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test). Every year 80 students are admitted to class VI, based on the performance of the children in a written test which is designed, developed and conducted by CBSE.

Nature of Selection Test


The selection test is a 2 hour, 100 mark exam which consists of 3 sections. It includes Mental Ability, Arithmetics and Language. The application forms are distributed free of cost every year generally in the month of August, September and October from Navodaya Vidyalaya, AEO office and from the office of DD Education (Malappuram Dt). All the students of class V studying in recognized school (or affiliated to CBSE) in the district are eligible to apply. Since 2003 lateral entry test was also being introduced in class IX to fill up vacancies if any to utilize the available resources most effectively.

Reservation


Admission is predominantly for children from rural areas with a provision of 75%. Reservation seats are available for children fro SC and ST communities. One-Third of the seats are for girl students. 3% of the seats are for disabled children.

Co-Educational Residential School Free Education


This vidyalaya is a co educational residential institution which offers free education from class VI to class XII. This vidyalaya provides free of charge amenities like boarding and lodging, uniforms including shoes and socks, text books, note books, medicines, toilet item like washing soap and coconut oil and other items like pen, pencil, rubber, instrument box etc..

Migration System


Migration is a unique scheme which aims at inculcating values of national integration in the tender minds. By this programme 30% of the students from class IX from JNV Allahabad (UP) for one academic year; in exchange vidyalaya also get 30% of class IX from JNV Allahabad (exchange from Hindi speaking state to non-Hindi speaking state). The festivals of Allahabad like Rakshabandan, Holi etc being celebrated in its true spirit by the students. Efforts are being made to promote understanding the diversity and plurality of Indian people and cultural heritage through activities that promote national integration.

Pace Setting Activities


Pace setting activities are a special feature of the JNV's which includes various activities such as organizing inter-school competitions, sports meets, cultural festivals, extending the facilities of the school to neighboring schools and local people, eradication of illiteracy, identification and presentation of local culture, awareness programmes to fight leprosy, AIDS, TB and other diseases etc.. These activities have activities have a very great impact on the students that they help to develop more positive altitudes to people and their problems, by developing characteristics such as sensitivity, empathy, caring, concern, compassion etc.

House System


Great emphasis has been given on the house system, which is a vital and important part of the management of the vidyalaya. There are four different houses each for girls and boys. They are Aravally, Nilgiri, Shivalik and Udaigiri. These names are common in all Navodayas of the country. The house is being looked after by a house master and an associate HM who are the teachers of the vidyalaya who would give parental care to the children. Through these activities taken up by the various houses, values like self discipline, self reliance, loyalty, honesty, punctuality, co-operation, team spirit etc are being inculcated in the mind of the children. Vidyalaya also organizes series of inter house competitions which provide opportunities to the students to learn through experience, develop capabilities for organizing programmes etc.

Alumni


The placements of the children who passed out of the vidyalaya are the direct evidence of the fact that the scheme is moving in the right direction. About 70% of the children are accommodated in the various professional courses. The first and second batch students are well placed in different areas and different places. There are doctors, engineers, computer professionals, scientists, NDA cadets and teachers.

Parent Teacher Association


PTC of the vidyalaya is an active body comprising of Principal as chairman, Vice- Principal as member secretary, five teacher representatives and thirteen parent representatives including four ladies, who are nominated by the general body meeting of the parents. The parents who are the stake holders of the institution are really a source and support.

Facilities


Vidyalaya is equipped with all modern and scientific facilities. It includes maintained computer lab, library with a lot of books, physics, biology, chemistry and mathematics lab, ART room, SUPW workshop. Vidyalaya also conducts workshops on mural paintings, glass paintings and on various modern technologies. Vidyalaya also has a modern multi gym, football ground cum athletic track, basketball court, badminton court and volleyball court. Vidyalaya also has a sick bay inside the campus with a staff nurse.
