Kottayam is a district of Kerala which is surrounded by Western Ghats on its east side and Vembanad lake and Kuttanad on its east side.Rubber plantations , hills, paddy fields and backwater stretches make Kottayam a unique place in Kerela.

Kottayam is known as the land of Letters and lakes. The first printing press in Malayalam is first published in this district by a Christian missionary Benjamin Baily. The first Malayalam newspaper Deepika , the popular newspaper of Kerala Malayala Manorama and D.C.books was first published in Kottayam. Now the popular publishing houses also publishes from here.

Kottayam is the first district to achieve complete literacy in India. The district is only 15.35% urbanised. Kottayam is famous for the rubber plantation. The one-forth of the total production of rubber in India is from Kottayam. This district is the first tobacco free district in India.

Tourism in Kottayam


Kottayam is known for its natural beauty. The western ghats on the east, Evergreen forestd, tea plantations, vast paddyfields and lakes makes Kottayam an enchanting tourist destination.

Kumarakam


It is a small tourist village which is the major picnic spot in Kottayam for the foreigners. It is a cluster of little islands on the Vemabanad lake in Kerala. It consists of varities of houseboats. It is one of the most beautiful villages in the world.

Kumarakam Bird Sanctuary


This is a popular bird sanctuary in Kerala. It is 12km away from the Kottayam town. It is located at the shore of Vembanad lake. A variety of species of birds can be spotted here. The local birds such as water fowl, water hen and cuckoo can be found here. The migratory birds like Siberian stork, egret, darter, teal and heron can be seen here seasonally.

Vagamon


This a hill station, about 60km away from Kottayam town. It ha a cool climate. It is favorable tourist location who loves adventure. There are many fine resorts in this place which offers facilities for trekking. This place is located at the boundary of Idukki district.

Travel


Cochin International Airport and Trivandrum International airport is the nearest airports.

Kottayam railway station is the nearest railway station. It is connected to the major cities of Kerala.

The municipal busstand is at the center of the Kottayam town. The private bus is available at bus station of Nagambadam and Kodimathi.

Boating facilities is available for tourists from Alapuzha to Kumarakom.
