In ancient times, Kettuvallams (countryboats) were used in Backwaters for transportation of people and cargo from one place to another particularly from the isolated interior places to town like Aleppey, Kottayam, Kollam, Cochim. On arrival of roads and bridges, countryboats were vanished. However, with the visit of Tourists, country boats were again launched in the form of Kerala Houseboats as a major tourist attraction. Houseboats are mainly of "Aanjili" wood, clubbed with Eco friendly Bamboo poles, Ropes of Coconut fibre,Bamboo mats, Carpets etc. They vary in size. 95 Ft in length and 13 Ft width is the normal size of a boat for one Bedroom facility. Fully furnished Big Houseboats of 107 Ft long and 19 Ft wide are also available now with added facilities like private balcony, rest room with comfortable chairs apart from bedrooms varying up to Five in numbers.

During the months of October to November, the operators are charging slightly higher rates than the June rates.
