Early life of Oommen Chandy


Oommen Chandy , present opposition leader of Kerala was born in an upper class family at Puthuppally House, Kumarakom on October 31, 1943 to K.O. Chandy and Baby Chandy in a Malankara Orthodox family. He was Kerala's 19th Chief Minister for two years in the period of 2004 to 2006. Afterwards he was selected as the leader of opposition. His friends and his intimate relatives are used to call him 'Kunjoonju' with love. When he enters into Kerala state politics he was an active leader in Kerala Students Union (KSU). In KSU, he was carried the duties of positions from unit president of KSU at St George High School, Puthupally to State President of the organization in 1967 to 1969. He is also an activist of INTUC (trade union). He had completed B.A. LLB from Government Law College, Ernakulam after he finished his education in CMS College, Kottayam and SB College, Changanassery. After his entrance in Kerala politics, he also joined in AICC as a Party member.

We can see rarely such a personality in politics. Actually His family yearning him to being with them more. Shri Oommen Chandy has the family including his wife Smt. Mariamma Oommen, who is a Canara Bank employee, a son Chandy Oommen and Daughters Maria and Achu. Smt Mariamma Oommen is an officer in Canara Bank. His Both daughters Maria and Achu are married to to Mr. Rikki Mathew and Mr. Leejo Philip, who are high reputed buisinessmen, respectievely.

Political life of Oommen Chandy

Oommen Chandy was nominated as INC candidate in 1970 Kerala state legislative assembly election from Puthupally constituency in Kottayam district. He started his carrier in politics with exciting success above 7000 votes in that election against CPM candidate E M George, who had not failed in 1965 and 1967 in the same constituency. Afterwards Puthupally constituency has never leaved him. He had reaped 9 times consecutive victories from 1970 to 2006 in the same constituency. In 1970 He was also the State Youth Congress President. In the period of 1977 April 11 to 1978 October 27, He was in charge of Kerala Labor Minster under the ministry of A.K.Antony. He was also elected and served as home minister from 1981 December to 1982 March in late Karunakaran's Ministry. He continued his ministry life as finance minister in the term of 1991- 1994.

Oommen Chandy's Chief Ministerial Period



After the resignation of A K Antony, as the 19th Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy, the Congress leader was elected on 30th August 2004. R.L. Bhatia, who was the Governor at that period administer the oath of office to him at the Raj Bhavan. Congress president Sonia Gandhi was declared his election for Chief Minister of Kerala on 1 September 2004. There was a strong supports for him from the captains of the industry such as Mr. Yousuf Ali(EMKE), Dr.P.Mohammad Ali(GALFAR), Dr.G.C.Gopala Pillai(FACT) and others. So he was elected with acceptance of all to this position after the resignation of Mr. A K Antony. Ommen Chandy, who had stood by him consistently for 40 years in Kerala Assembly, crowned the position for two years from end of August 2004 to May 2006. Even by this short span of period he showed his Statesmanship through his initiatives. Kerala witnessed a new horizon of development in his period. This capable politician brought a lot of new projects to Kerala which opened handful of job opportunities for the job aspirants. Implementations of meticulous action plans at the right time made his ruling period more colourful. Some of the plans which he headed were Vallarpadam Transshipment Terminal, Vizhinjam Port, Smart City, Metro Rail, Capital City Development, Kerala State Transport Project, Sabarimala Master Plan, Kannur International Airport, and Trivandrum
