Kerala, known by the epithet God's Own Country, is one of the most beautiful states in India. One of the major attraction for a tourist in Kerala is houseboat cruise on the sprawling backwaters of Kerala. Vembanad Lake in Kumarakom offers a unique houseboating experience for the visiting tourists.

Kerala, known as the God's Own Country, is blessed with beautiful beaches, mountains and vast stretches of backwaters. Alleppey, a district in Kerala, criss-crossed with channels of backwaters and endowed with a beautiful beach, is known as the Venice of the East.

One of the major attractions for a tourist visiting Kerala is houseboat cruise on the sprawling stretches of its backwaters. House boats come in various flavors. Depending on the requirement of the tourists, cruise boats with single to five bedrooms with attached bathrooms, kitchenette, and air conditioning are available. There are also boats that offer air conditioned conference halls. Luxurious boats offer swimming pools and Jacuzzi also.

Kumarakom - The Tourists' Paradise

Kumarakom in Kottayam district is the center of attraction for a houseboat ride. The Vembanad Lake, the largest backwater in Kerala, in Kumarakom is known for a variety of freshwater and marine fish species. Karimeen (Pearl spot) is the most famous one. Houseboat cruise on the Vembanad Lake is a unique experience for the visiting tourists. There are different types of house boats. There is type of boat known as Kettuvallam, which was before used by people for fishing and transporting commodities. There are also boats known as Iruttukutthi Vallam, Churulan Vallam and Chundan Vallam(Snake Boat), … etc, which are very well known in Kerala for their participation in Kumarakom Boat Race. Its vast backwater stretches and landscape, rich in flora and fauna, make Kumarakom a paradise for the tourists.
