Alappuzha, with its beautiful houseboats cruising majestically in its backwaters, has been the main tourist attraction of Kerala. With its natural pleasant climate for most of the year, may be except during the monsoons, is the heaven on Earth.


About the town Alappuzha, the major tourist attraction of Kerala


Alleppey / Alappuzha was founded by Raja Kesavadasan, the Diwan of the Travancore Kingdom. The town of Alappuzha has a charm of its own with its lush green paddy fields, swaying palm trees and the boat cruises and makes the place an idyllic surrounding for an holiday vacation. Tours to Alappuzha in the God's own country Keralam has been a recognized as a favourite tourist attraction all over the world.

Alappuzha is located in the mid part of the state of Kerala. Alappuzha comes with picture perfect sceneries with still lagoons and lakes, moving streams and rivulets, palm fringed canals and the last but not the least, majestically swaying houseboats with the sights of villagers bustling around all along the shores. It is the venice of the east, you have to see it to believe this. Alappuzha is at present emerging as the hot favourite of the Kerala Tourism with its Ayurveda, houseboats, backwaters and what not.

By weather wise also Alappuzha is warm through out the year and it is very humid, when it rains heavily during the monsoons. As the monsoons get over the Boat races start and it is the time of Onam festival. The silvery sands on the beaches and the canal network system of the backwaters are the major tourist attractions of Alappuzha district. Alappuzha has the largest network of canals and that has become the life line of Kerala. There are Water Carnivals held regularly during the festival months using the gigantic snakeboats or the country canoes which are of varied sizes. Every community or the village will have a boat to care for and the boat will be their pride when it participates in the carnivals and races.

How to Reach Alappuzha


Alappuzha can be easily accessed from all the three international airports of Kerala namely Thiruvananthpuram ( 154 kilometers ) , Kochi ( 64 kilometers ) and Kozhikode.

Alappuzha is located on the National Highway 47 which runs through most of the southern parts of Kerala to Kanyakumari in the state of Tamil Nadu. Because of this the district is connected to almost all the important cities in and around Kerala, namely, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Mumbai etc
Alapuzha has a railway station and it is linked to all the cities through Ernakulam. The Bus stand and the ferry stand are situated at about 5 kilometers from the railway station. Ferry services are also available from Kollam to Alappuzha and the boats pass through the scenic waterways of the backwaters of Kerala
