Story content

Mammootty, plays the character of Mohan who wants to be in the limelight of film as an actor and he was ready to go to any extend to make his long cherished dreams come true. Mohan's wife, Savitri who is a music teacher was supportive to the efforts of her husband, for the exposition of acting talents in the big screen. Mohan who is primarily a school teacher went on to knock at door of ace directors of Malayalam film industry to hung upon in the silver screen, but his imploration didn't kindle any lights on his path. Director Renjith gives him some inspirational words that if his desire is very ardent no barriers is going to come on his way and if Mohan endeavours he can cling to what he desired. Once Mohan's hope sky rocketed when one of his friend told him he will be given chance to portray his talent in director Sreekumar's film. But his elation and excitement was short lived as the director turned down his request to do the film. Mohan felt dejected in front of his family and friends, and left the shooting location.

Story gets into an interesting twist when Mohan joins a gang of ruffians in disguise as a man from Mumbai underworld. He joins them with the intention of emulating their mannerisms which can be helpful in the role he was supposed to portray. These has some spells of hilarious moments which gives audience laugh riot. In the event of unexpected turn Mohan was nabbed by police for involving in a scuffle in his effort to save his friends who were 'sitting duck' to attack from rival hoodlums. 'Best actor' also serve the audience the 'chilli of suspense' and it has the ingredients to glue the audience to their seats to the very end. Watch out whether Mohan going to land up in what he thinks is the real calling for him.

Strengths

Mammootty as an actor has the capacity to pull the crowd to theatres and in this film also he was able to elicit good response from his viewers with his flamboyancy and versatility. Sruthi Ramakrishna was able to act the emotions of her character in this film and attained considerable success. Story had an excellent climax and had the vein of humour which make the film worth to watch.
Ajayan Vincent, brilliant cinematographer deserves applause for nicely capturing the cyclorama of landscape of Kerala village as well as the scenic Kochi sites. Another silver line about this movie is its story line which seems novel and impressive.

Weakness

Viewers can have dregs of feeling in their mind when they leave the cinema halls that Martin Prakkat, still photographer turned director, could have made this film more better, especially the first half. The novice hood of director was very much evident in many shots he had taken in first half.

Music director Biji Bal's score failed to stir the soul of listeners and was mediocre.Script had some loose ends which attributes to snail pace in first half.

Conclusion

The film 'Best actor' neither falls under the category of 'must watch' film nor it 'blew chunks', as it has the things to keep you in theatres without getting you bored. This flick is the concoction of emotions, humour, melancholy and suspense. If woven with more diligence the 'Best Actor' could have got more critical acclaim and more taste, which was produced by catering giant M.Noushad under the banner 'Big screen cinemas.'
