Kerala Niyamasabha – An Overview


Elections to Kerala Niyamasabha will he held in 2011 to choose new representatives to Kerala Legislative Assembly for a period of 5 years from 2011 to 2016. The dates for the elections is yet to be finalized by the Election Commission. Let us take a brief look into the history of Kerala Niyamasabha.

A Brief peek into history


• Kerala Legislative Council was formed in 1888.
• Sree Moolam Popular Assembly of Travancore was formed in 1904.
• In 1905, voting rights were accorded to all citizens who paid the annual land revenue.
• In 1925, a Legislative Council was formed at Cochin.
• In 1956, the State of Kerala was formed.
• The first elections to Kerala Niyamasabha took place in 1957.
• 1st Kerala Legislative Assembly was formed in 1st March 1957. EMS Namdoothirippad was the First Chief Minister of Kerala.
• In 1960, the 2nd Legislative Assembly was formed jointly by Congress and Praja Socialist Party. Pattom Thanu Pillai, of the PSP was the Chief Minister.
• The third Legislative Assembly was formed in 1967, with EMS of Marxist Communist Party of India as the Chief Minister.
• The fourth Legislative Assembly came into being in 1970 with C. Achutha Menon as the Chief Minister.
• The fifth Legislative Assembly, with K Karunakaran of the Congress Party as the Chief Minister, came into being in 1977. After a while Karunakaran resigned, and Mr A.K. Antony took over as the CM. He resigned after a few months.
• The 6th Legislative Assembly was formed in 1980 with E. K. Nayanar of the LDF as CM.
• The 7th Legislative Assembly came into being in 1982 with K. Karunakaran of the UDF as CM.
• In 1987, the 8th Legislative Assembly was formed with E. K. Nayanar of the LDF as the CM.
• The UDF formed the 9th Legislative Assembly with K Karunakaran of the UDF as the CM.
• The 10th Legislative Assembly of Kerala was formed in 1996 by the LDF with E. K. Nayanar as the CM.
• In 2001, the 11th Legislative Assembly came into being with A.K. Antony swearing in as the CM. Later Antony resigned and Mr OOmman Chandy took over as the CM.
• The 12th Legislative Assembly, currently in office, was formed in 2006 by the LDF with Mr V.S. Achuthanandan as the CM.
