Vayalar Ravi


Vayalar Ravi is the current Union Cabinet Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs and Civil Aviation. He was given the addition charge of Civil Aviation in the recently-concluded cabinet reshuffle, replacing Praful Patel, the former incumbent of the ministry.

Vayalar Ravi is a well known Indian politician from Kerala. He is currently the Central Cabinet Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs and Civil Aviation. He is a member of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Indian Parliament.

Vayalar Ravi was born on June 4, 1937 in the revolutionary land of Vayalar, in Alappuzha, Kerala. He founded the Kerala Student's Union (KSU), the students' wing of Indian National Congress, and was extremely active in politics since his student days. He was a prominent leader of the KSU along with stalwarts like A.K. Antony and Oomman Chandy.

Political Career


He entered the national politics with his election to the 5th Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian Parliament, in 1971 from Chirayinkeezhu in Thiruvanthapuram district. He was also a member of the 6th Lok Sabha. He was elected to Kerala Niyamasabha in 1982, and served as Kerala State Home Minister from 1982 to 1986, under K. Karunakaran's Chief Ministership. But later he resigned owing to disagreements with him. He was re-elected to Niyamasabha in 1987, and served as an MLA. He had also served as the KPCC (Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee) president. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1994 and 2003. He became the Union Cabinet Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs in 2006. After the Parliament elections in 2009, he was again made Cabinet Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs. In the Recent Cabinet reshuffle, he was given the additional charge of Union Civil Aviation Ministry.

Vayalar Ravi was married to his long-time political associate Mercy Ravi. They have three children. Mercy died in 2009 following a kidney failure.
