ONV Kurupp - The Legendry Poet Of Malayalam

ONV Kuruppu (Ottaplakkal Nambiyadikkal Velu Kurup) is a renowned Malayalam poet from Kerala, India., He was born to O. N. Krishna Kurup and K. Lakshmikutty Amma, on May 27, 1931 at Kollam, Kollam. He lost his father at an early age. He had graduated from SN College, Kollam, and then moved to Thiruvanthapuram to pursue master's degree course in Malayalam literature at the Travancore University.
He had joined Kerala Government Service as a college lecturer, and had worked in Maharaja's Collete- Ernakulam, University College – Thiruvananthapuram, Arts and Science College – Kozhikode, and Brennan College – Thalassery among others. Later he had joined Government Women's College – Thiruvananthapuram as the Head of Malayalam Department. He was also a visiting professor at Kozhikode University. He retired from service in 1986.As a Poet
ONV's first published poem Munnottu (forward) came out in 1946 in a local publication. Porutunna Soundaryam, which was published in 1949, is a collection of his poems. This was followed by another collection, Dahikkunna Paanapathram.

ONV has also enriched Malayalam movie song lyrics with his highly poetic, and meaningful lyrics that went well with the situations for which they were written for. He was also involved with the well known drama troupe Kerala People's Arts Club (KPAC), which played a vital role in championing many revolutionary movements in the state. He had penned many popular lyrics for various plays of KPAC. His first movie was Kaalam Maarunnu for which music was composed by his friend, G. Devarajan. Incidentally, this was also Devarajan's first movie as a music composer. He had won one National Award and one thirteen State Awards for best lyrics. He had so far written about 900 lyrics for 232 movies apart from his numerous works for plays and albums. ONV – Devarajan, ONV – Salil Chowdhary, and ONV – MB Sreenivasan were very popular musical partnership that had given birth to several popular hits. He had also worked with music directors like Baburaj, Dhakshinamoorthy, Ravindran, MK Arjunan, Shyam, Johnson, SP Venkitesh, and Ouseppachan.Awards from State / Central Governments

He lives in Thiruvananthapuram with his wife and two children.
