Here you can find all resources about the voting rights of NRI- NRI voting rights. The NRI can now vote and can participate in upcoming elections.
The waiting is over for the 5 million Non-Resident Indians living abroad with the
announcement that
NRI can vote in India
in the Loksabha and state assembly elections. The Government on Thursday announces this rule, in which NRIs who hold Indian passports and have not acquired citizenship of another country can vote and contest in elections in India.
The notifications is a real happiest moment in the
NRI community
since the speech of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas last year, in which he said that holders of Indian passport living abroad could get the right to vote by the time of the 2014 Lok Saba elections. The current situation do not allowed a person to appear in the voter's list if he or she in the outside for more than six months. The election commission now starts to enroll the NRI citizens in Voters list.
The very important point to be noted that the rule does not allowed the NRI citizens to vote via the internet from abroad. After the enrollment in the voter's list, the person can cast his vote only if he physically present in the polling station of his local constituency with the original passport. But many of the NRI's passports are held by their employers. In case of such employers, the embassy can certify that the person held the passport and now in custody of the employer; and the person does not taken any other citizenship.
Here we give
the procedure to apply for enrollment in Voter's list for an NRI
.
Every NRI citizen can register his name on the address mentioned in his passport.
Send it to the officer concerned directly or send it by post. if you would like to send it by post, don't forget to send their details and a photocopy of their passport containing photographs and visa documents. All the copies must be attested by competent official of the Indian mission at their destination. otherwise, the applicants will be rejected.
