Although the term 'Artificial intelligence' came into use only after 1956, ancient myths have been describing artificially created beings since time immemorial. The ancient Egyptians believed that their sacred statues had life. In ancient Greek mythology ,Pygmalion ,a sculptor created a statue so beautiful that he fell in love with it and brought it to life. Then there was Hephaestus who helped to create the first women, with the assistance of other gods.
What is Artificial Intelligence?
Intelligence is quite difficult to define because it is made up of many things. Intelligence is the ability to perceive, learn, reason, understand, remember, communicate, plan, execute and achieve. Human beings generally consider themselves to have the highest degree of intelligence on this planet.
What we have been discussing so far is natural intelligence. Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is different from natural intelligence. It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. Intelligence involves mechanisms, and AI research has discovered how to make computers carry out some of these mechanisms. However, though computers may have vast electronic memories, and be able to do tasks given to them much faster than we can, the fact remains that computers do not understand what they are doing. Artificial Intelligence has a long way to go before that can be achieved.
Development of science of Artificial Intelligence
Early inventions in electronics, engineering, and many other disciplines have influenced the development of Artificial Intelligence. The English mathematician Alan Turing may have been the first to decide that Artificial Intelligence was best researched by programming computers rather than by building machines.
In 1956, Jhon McCarthy coined the term 'Artificial Intelligence' as the topic of the Dartmouth Conference, the first conference devoted to the subject. Soon, many astonishing programs were written using Artificial Intelligence.

In my point of view the intelligence means :-A very general mental capability that can plan, solve every problems, think abstractly, has complex ideas, able to learn quickly and learn from the experiences. in fact the intellegent is self reliant that does rely on anyone or anything.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence of machines and the branch of computer science that aims to create it.
i.e Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the area of computer science focusing on creating machines that can engage on behaviors that humans consider intelligent.The ability to create intelligent machines has intrigued humans since ancient times, and today with the advent of the computer and 50 years of research into AI programming techniques, the dream of smart machines is becoming a reality.
