About the Marthoman Jacobite Syrian Cathedral Church at Mulanthuruthy
Marthoman Jacobite Syrian Cathedral Church was founded and established under the Holy Apostolic See of Antioch, and the Church was consecrated on 3rd Karkkidakkam (July),in between 1100-1125 A.D later in the 16th century the church was modified. This is one of the ancient churches in India. You can see from the carvings on the granite door of the church, where it is inscribed in the syrian script, "the door of the Mar Thoman Church was re-erected on 9th Thulam 1575 A.D".
The church has the style of Gothic architecture and the carvings, sculptures symbolic icons and the beautiful wall paintings are a blend of other architectures namely, Indian, West asian and European.
About the construction of the Marthoman Jacobite Syrian Cathedral Church
The uniquely designed altar of the church with wooden carvings and paintings reminds one of the church in Jerusalem. You can also see that there is a massive sculptural covering on the eastern side of the main Altar, which has the carvings of faces of cherubins and representations of the Holy Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The floor tiles used in the church have been imported and there are rare antique paintings on the ceilings each having its own story to tell.
The Baptism stand at the church has been sculpted out of a single granite stone. The two storyed Parish building, its wooden walls with sculpted ceiling as well as its strong room is also said to be very old and have withstood the ravage of time.
Activities of the Marthoman Jacobite Syrian Cathedral Church
There are two schools run under the management of the Mulanthuruthy Cathedral Church, they are, C.G.L.P School and the St. Gregorious English Medium CBSE School
There is a sunday school, Youth association, Vanitha Samajam, Kudumbaunit and Visvasa samrakshana Samity associations also there .
