Almost all people of the world are familiar with the name Raja Ravi Varma. It is important to note that Raja Ravi Varma was a great Indian painter, who belongs to Travancore state. He was born on 29 April 1848 to Ezhumavail Neelakanthan Bhattatiripad & Umayamba Thampuratti. It should be noted that Umayamba Thampurati was a writer as well as poet but Ezhumavail Neelakanthan Bhattatiripad was a great scholar. The original name of Raja Ravi Varma was Ravi Varma Koil Thampuran. He had training in water painting as well as oil paintings. Pururuttathi Nal Bhageerathi Amma Thampuran is the wife of Raja Ravi Varma.

Achievements of Raja Ravi Varma


As a painter, the works of Raja Ravi Varma are very popular in India as well as worldwide. Remember that his popularity spread all over the world because of his great paintings. The works of Raja Ravi Varma was shown at the Vienna exhibition of paintings that was held in 1873. He won an important award from this exhibition. But in 1893 he was awarded two gold medals from the World's Columbian Exposition that was held in Chicago. It should be noted that the World's Columbian Exposition is also known as The Chicago World's Fair. Another important fact was that he was awarded the Kaiser-i-Hind gold medal in 1904 by the viceroy Lord Curzon. Actually Kaiser-i-hind was a medal which was awarded by the British monarch. Also note that this medal was established in the year 1900. Another interesting fact is that there are three grades of this medal which are namely gold, silver and bronze respectively.
