Janapriyan malayalam movie poster

Malayalam cinema is experiencing new changes with a number of new directors coming into the industry and trying their hand at direction. One such debutante is director Boban Samuel who has recently delivered a movie called Janapriyan. The film was released in the theatres on May 20th 2011 and since then it has been creating good responses from the audience. The viewers of Malayalam cinema are enjoying the portrayal of the simple story which is essayed in a very typical Malayalam way. The film has its soul and heart at the correct place. The movie has been taken in a humorous yet realistic manner which will surely strike a chord with the Malayalam crowd. The script of Janapriyan has been handled aptly by Krishna Poojapura who has previously penned down the script for 'Four Friends'. Janapriyan is a charming movie with its share of sweet moments to make you smile and is definitely a one-time watch atleast. It is one of those kind of movies which you would watch without expecting anything much but it ends up giving a lot of satisfaction. Though the story is not anything new, the character of Jayasurya is so charming that it has brought a fresh look to the film and makes it different from the other films which have the same storyline. The only little drawback of the film is that the climax is very ordinary and nothing much to talk about which could have been made more interesting. The film starts off in a splendid way and the first half is really interesting but as the story moves towards the end, one can notice a lot of depreciation in the rhythm and it slackens delivering a mediocre climax.

Jayasurya and Bhama in Janapriyan

Story of Janapriyan Malayalam movie

The story of Janapriyan starts off with Vysakh (Manoj K Jayan) who dreams of becoming a great director and is waiting to get a good break in the job. These scenes have been handled skilfully by the director in a very humorous way. Later on in the story, Vysakh, whose actual job is at a government office, is asked to leave from the workplace due to some of his wrong-doings. Because of his ambitions, he is always in a dream land and doesn't complete his office work on time. This enables Priyan (Jayasurya) to take up his place. In the meantime, Vysakh sets out on a long leave to search for a producer who can help him to accomplish his dreams as a director. After this juncture in the film, the story fully revolves around Priyan and the way he becomes the 'janapriyan' or loved one among his colleagues at the government office. This adoration comes due to Priyan's innocent, hardworking, honest and straight forward nature. Priyan is also a very talkative guy. His father suicided in his childhood and as a result the entire responsibility of the family, including his sister's marriage, falls on Priyan's shoulders. Through the story, Priyan also falls in love with his neighbour Meera (Bhama), who he misunderstands to be the servant of the neighbour's house (which is actually a bungalow). As Priyan is a realistic guy without high dreams, he wishes to marry a girl of less status so that she can manage with the low income that he earns. Everything goes well until one day Vysakh returns after being unsuccessful in his search. So he decides to rejoin the office in his old post itself. Priyan pleads to Vysakh asking him extend his leave so that Priyan can continue working in the office. Vysakh agrees but with a condition that Priyan should find a good producer for him. The simple guy Priyan doesn't even know the job of a producer in a film but still ventures out on the search as he wants to save his job. The rest of the story shows how this affects Priyan's life and also how his love story is handled.

Janapriyan

Performance of cast in Janapriyan Malayalam movie

Jayasurya, as Priyan, has given one of the best performances in his career. He has stolen the show in Janapriyan and will definitely emerge as the Janapriyan of Malayalam cinema with such good acting. Jayasurya does not overact at all in the film and thoroughly gets into the skin of his character. He has given an exceptional performance and simply rocks in the sentimental scenes. Priyan's genuine and likeable nature is the highlight of the film and Jayasurya plays it very naturally with ease delivering his dialogues perfectly. Manoj K Jayan, who is not very often seen in a comical role, has also done his part with utmost perfection. The rest of the cast, including Bhama are impressive in their allotted roles. It is only Sarayu's role which might be a little boring and irritating. But luckily she doesn't have much screen space in the movie. The entry of Salim Kumar, who has just arrived after receiving his national award, is another highlight of the movie.

Verdict and rating of Janapriyan Malayalam movie

Janapriyan is a short story with a crisp theme and has not been dragged at all. In fact, it is just a two hour movie because of which it can never get boring at any point of the story. Janapriyan shows the life of a common man which can be relatable and compared to real life situations. The comic part of the movie is also done extremely well without going for forced wits and unnecessary humorous scenes. Though the songs of Janapriyan are not too great, they are still good and fit the mood of the situations in the story well. The director has taken care not to place the songs just anywhere in the movie but in such a way as to carry the story forward with the correct placements in the narrative. The picturisation of the songs are also interesting and worth watching. It is a clean and decent movie which can be watched by people of all ages. One doesn't have to worry about double meaning dialogues, item songs, violent action or over-the-top romance. Though the story of Janapriyan is quite predictable throughout, it is still worth watching and should not be missed for anyone who wishes to watch a decent, simple, humorous film. But of course, don't expect anything out-of-the-world. If one would say in Hindi, this film is totally 'paisa vasool' or worth your money.

Rating - 4/5
Verdict - A simple and interesting movie which is definitely worth watching
