History, merits and demerits of Television

Television is the most popular and effective communication media in the world. Trade and business also depends on television to advertise their products. A brief history of television in india is given in this article. Advanced technology brought drastic changes in appearance and uses of it. The old concept of television, a long antenna with booster and cable running to the instrument inside had changed. A comparison of old and new generation televisions are also done. Highlighted the merits and demerits.

Though television in India started during 1959, daily transmission could start only in 1965. Only certain selected cities had this service till 1975. National telecast started only during 1982, with only one national channel which was government owned Doordarshan. The Ramayana and Mahabharatha were the first major television serials. These two serials brought a record in viewership, and more and more people started purchasing Television only to watch these serials. Another spark to this boost was the introduction of colour television sets and Asian Games hosted by India, during 1982. For which, new transmitters were installed for terrestrial broadcasting. During early nineties with the introduction of satellite TV, foreign channels also started coming to our drawing rooms. Till then, Indian viewers had to satisfy with Doordarshan's dull programs.
With the introduction of cable TV, the number of Television owners drastically increased, irrespective of financial condition of the family. The cheap rate of colour television sets also boosted the rate of purchasing. Increased number of channels was an added attraction. Nowadays there could be hardly any house without a television and a cable line, which provides programs round the clock. Some even have their own Dish antenna, with which they don't have to go behind the cable tv operators.
The old generation, heavy sized, excessive power consuming CRT (Cathode Ray tube) televisions are getting rapidly replaced by new generation tvs like LCD, Led, Plasma and HDTV. Which are less power consuming, compact sized (suitable to hang on walls like a framed picture), and free from radiation hazards.
Though, there are hundreds of channels, very few keeps the standard of quality signals and programs. There are a number of channels in Malayalam too. Some of them provide standard programs, and some seems exist only of boring comedy and meaningless serials. However, these serials keep the average malayalees glued with it.

Merits of television

The effects of tv in family life/demerits of television

Communication between the family members reduced. During evening time, the family members used to get together in drawing room. All sorts of discussions will take place there. Children will narrate the incidents happened in the class and school. Other members will have their issues to be discussed. Elders may get into serious discussions about various subjects. In short, the drawing room will become a family darbar for some time. Nowadays, such things are rare in most families. All will be watching their favorite channel.
The alone child at home will be more concentrated to cartoon serials. He/she will be sitting in front of it for hours together, which at times considered as a great relief to housewives, as they can concentrate to their work smoothly. Or otherwise, he/she may run around in the courtyard, demanding supervision of elders. This, in fact denies his right to mingle and play with other children. It will affect his health also. Children are very interested to imitate the heroes of the cartoons. He may even adopt their way of talk, their behavior, may even use those obscene language, as he is not aware about the good and bad in it.
Some times the fancy of husband or wife towards tv disturbs their relation also.
Social contacts also seem reducing.
