Kerala Style Fish Pickle

Ingredients

½ kg fish
½ tsp turmeric powder
2 tbsps chilly powder
Salt to taste
1 big garlic pod
2" ginger piece
½ tbsps jeera

5 green chillies (slit into 2 pieces)
1" ginger piece (cut into thin slices)
1 garlic pod
¼ tsp mustard seeds
½ tbsps peppercorns
3 tbsps chilly powder
¼ bottle vinegar
¼ kg oil
A sprig of curry leaves

Method

Grind turmeric powder, salt, chilly powder to a smooth paste . Clean the fish and cut it into small pieces. Apply this masala paste and keep fish aside.
Grind the garlic, ginger and jeera from the first section of the ingredients and make a smooth paste using vinegar.
Heat oil, fry the fish till it becomes light brown in colour. Remove it from the stove. Again, heat oil and add mustard seeds. When the seeds crackle, add ginger, garlic and green chillies. When the green chillies are light in colour, add garlic-ginger-jeera paste, peppercorns and curry leaves and fry well. Add the fried fish pieces and mix gently. Remove the pan from stove and add chilly powder and vinegar. Add salt to taste. Put it back onto the stove and simmer till the oil comes up.
