The story of Chakkulathukavu Sree Bhagavathy Templeis that once, a hunter and his family came to the forest for collecting wood. While collecting firewood, he observed a serpent coming towards him. The hunter tried to attack the snake with his axe, but it slipped into the forest. The hunter was so brave that he went into the forest in search of the snake and at last reached near a lake. There the hunter saw a chithalputtu that looked like a decorated golden chain & he was able to see the snake inside it. When the hunter tried to hit the snake with his axe, it disappeared. Narada in the form of a stranger appeared before the hunter & asked him to break that shell. The hunter obeyed the words of Narada and at last he found an image inside it. It was the image of Goddess Vanadurga. After this incidence, that place gained popularity among the people. The Chakkulathukavu Sree Bhagavathy Temple has some important features.

Other important features of this Chakkulathukavu Sree Bhagavathy Temple, which is believed to be more than 3000 years old include an idol of Vana Durga with 8 hands, idols of lord Ayyappa, lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Muruga, Yakshi, Lord Ganesh and serpent gods respectively.

Chakkulathukavu Sree Bhagavathy Temple Pongala FestivalDuring the pongala festival of Sree Bhagavathy Temple Chakkulathukavu, large number of women devotees will be present at the temple for the pongala function. These devotees prepare food using rice, jaggery and coconut as a humble offering to mother goddess. For cooking purposes a round earthen pot is used. From the divine fire inside the sanctum sanctorum, the chief priest will light the main hearth. This fire will be exchanged throughout the persons. By offering this pongala, the problems, confusions and griefs of the devotees are washed away. It is believed that during the pongala festival, the holy presence of Chakkulathamma is there.
