Civil Service Exam - Preperation tips for students


Civil service preliminary exam is scheduled on 20th May 2012. Many of them are studying for the preliminary exam now. Along with studying you should also learn how to mark and fill up the OMR answer sheet. A single mistake will make you disqualified from the exam. Here is some useful tips.

Civil Service Examinations are competitive examinations conducted by Union Public Service Commission(U P S C)in India. Through this exam candidates are recruited to various civil services of Indian government, which includes Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Revenue Service (IRS). This examination is considered as one of the most difficult examinations among the competitive examination.

The Civil Service examination is a 3 step process

Step 1 : Preliminary exam - this is an objective type screening test. The aim is to select candidates for the main exam.

Step 2 : Main exam - this is the main written test.

Step 3 : Personality test or interview.

The final declaration of the examination will take around one and half years. The minimum age to appear for Civil Service exam is 21 years and upper age limit is maximum 30 years. Candidate must be Indian citizen to attempt this exam. The number of attempts for Civil Service is limited to 4 times for general category and for O B C category it is 7. For SC/ST categories there is no limit.

Below is the general things you should do on the day of a Civil Service examination.

Before setting out for exam


We should prepare early what all things we have to bring to the exam.
Those who are preparing for the preliminary exam should compulsory bring the following items.

1) Admit card
Those who had been eligible for preliminary exam should download the admit card from www.upsc.gov.in. If the photo in the admit card is not clear bring two passport size photo to the exam hall.

2) Candidates should bring anyone of the following as an identity proof
ID card / Passport / Driving License.

3) Bring a clipboard in order to place the OMR sheet to write.

4) Use only black ball point pen for answering, because black ink has more clarity while computer valuation.

5) Electronic equipments are strictly prohibited inside the exam hall.

O M R answer sheet


Check the number of the OMR sheet immediately after getting the sheet. The next thing is to check the booklet series of the question paper. If there is no series number in either of the OMR sheet or question paper, return it and ask for a new one.then we have to mark the booklet series of the question paper in the OMR sheet. Candidates will have to fill up all the portions of the OMR sheet correctly with black ball point pen only. Any mistake in filling any of the portions in the OMR sheet will make the sheet disqualify. Care should be taken to fill the bubbles while bubbling the answer.

Answering the questions


Every question has 4 answer options A,B,C,D. Bubble the corresponding option in the OMR sheet for the same question itself. Don't make mistakes carelessly. Every wrong answer has a negative 1 mark, so try to answer only the questions you know.

Important Tip


It is compulsory to sign the list that invigilators gives you, and also we have to write the series number of question booklet and OMR answer sheet. Don't hesitate to ask your doubts.
