916 (Nine One Six) is one of the most anticipating Malayalam films of 2012 since it is the latest directorial venture of M Mohanan. He had made a splendid debut with Mammootty-Sreenivasan duo through 'Katha Parayumbol' in 2007. 'Katha Parayumbol 'was well received by the critics and audiences alike. Along with that movie had won the state award for best film with popular appeal and aesthetic value in the same year. It was remade in Tamil by veteran director P Vasu with Superstar Rajnikanth and also adapted in to Hindi by Top director Priyadarsan. His second film 'Manikyakkallu' also bagged a state award for the best story. Mohanan was notable for the selection of stories with social relevance. M Mohanan captures the family audience easily since his films follows the making style and narrative pattern of Sathyan Anthikkad and Sreenivasan films. Story of the movie
The story of the movie revolves around the life of Dr: Harikrishnan played by Anoop Menon and his daughter Malavika, played by debutant Malavika Menon. Harikrishnan is an ideal doctor. He prefers service rather than being rich. There is a strong bond between Hari and his daughter. Dr.Ramesh(Mukesh) is Harikrishnan's best friend. Ramesh also had an urge for service but he is forced to earn more by his greedy wife played by Meera Vasudev. Meanwhile Malavika fall in love with a positive minded young guy named Prashanth played by youth attraction Asif Ali. One day Harikrishnan accidentally saw Malavika with at a mall during class hours. 916 is a term usually used to imply the quality of gold. But gold has nothing much to do with this film. Apart from gold, this film deals with the purity of relationships and human and family values. The movie portrays different aspects of relationships such as father- child, husband-wife, mother-child, relationship with friends and so on. Divorce cases are increase in Kerala per year. Director had made a sincere attempt to redefine the necessity of relationships as a protest to the increasing divorce cases. The simple narrative pattern close to our lives is the other remarkable feature of this film. Anoop Menon once again steals the show with his mind-blowing performance. Dr. Harikrishnan is secure in Anoop's hands he handle the character with such an ease. One who had watch 'Katha Parayumbol' never forget Shafna. She had delivered such a brilliant performance in that film even though a new comer. Malavika Menon is another contribution from the director who contributed Shafna earlier to the film industry. We couldn't feel it as Malavika's debut movie since she had done a commendable job as Harikrishnan's daughter. The chemistry between Anoop Menon and Malavika Menon is the main highlight of the movie. Drawbacks of the Movie
Some loopholes are there in the screenplay of the movie. Most of the scenes are allotted to the character of Harikrishnan. Director had failed to use the real caliber of veterans such as Mukesh and K.P.A.C Lalitha. Asif Ali's performance examines the patience of the viewers. Second half of the movie is little bit dragging. Excess quantity of emotion is the other drawback of the movie. Certain scenes seem to be artificial. M.Jayachandran - M.Mohanan team contributed memorable songs in their earlier films. 'Vythysthanamoru Barbam Balane.., 'Mambullikkavil...' (Both from Kadha Parayumbol) and 'Chembarathy Kammalitt...'(From Manikyakkallu) etc are ample evidences for this. Likewise 'Nattumaviloru Maina..' sung by Shreya Ghoshal already listed in the hit charts. The cinematography by Faisal Ali is good. Ranjan Abraham could have done a better work especially in the second half.

916 is a simple movie. Viewers can relate this movie to their surroundings since it addresses certain issues around us. It is unfortunate that movie fails to create the real impact on screen due to certain loopholes. Such nice attempts should be encouraged. Go and watch the movie with your family.
