Thattekkad bird sanctuary is one of the finest bird sanctuary in India. This sanctuary was set up in 1983 and the chief architect behind the construction is famous ornithologist, Dr.Salim Ali. For that, this sanctuary is also known as Salim Ali bird sanctuary. The sanctuary is located amidst the dense evergreen forests of Kothamangalam district in Idukki. With more than 270 species of birds, this is a real heaven for ornithologists.

Accommodations are available in the PWD rest houses and lodges in Kothamangalam town. Apart from these, there is a three storied watch tower inside the sanctuary and a forst department bungalow,known as 'Hornbill' for accommodation. In place of electrical lamps solar lamps are used in the watch tower.

The flora and fauna in Thattekkad is rich. The main animals seen in Thattekkad are elephants, leopards, bear and porcupine. The place hosts many reptiles like python and cobra. With more than 270 species, birds are the most attractive feature of the sanctuary. Some of the main birds seen here are Falcon, Black winged kite, Hornbill, Sunbird, Bee eater, White breasted water hen, Night heron etc. Thattekkad also has a dense tropical forest in the 25 acre land.
