Chakka pazham - Jack fruit - was a widely found fruit in South and south East Asia originally. In India it was mainly found or cultivated in Kerala State. Now it is found in Asia, Africa, Latin American countries. In India it is now available in many states.
It may be the biggest of fruits in size and weight. The fruit when ripe will have a strong smell hence it is not usually used in salads. The fruit is very tasty and sweet. It will be very difficult to eat this fruit in large quantities unlike other fruits.
There are mainly 2 varieties namely the 'Varikka' and 'Koozha'. There is also one variety called the 'Thamara Chakka r 'Kadachakka'which is not used as ripe fruit but used for vegetable preparations. Koozha is not eaten generally when ripe as it will be very difficult to eat and swallow. The seeds are used for vegetable preparations. The outer skin and the inside fiber like bindings are all used for feeding cattle. The tender jack fruits are used for preparing vegetable dishes.

Elder persons like me always has a fascination towards jack fruit. In our childhood we used to eat jack fruit and various items made of it. During the particular season (summer) in Kerala mango and jackfruit will be available in plenty.
Jackfruit is very nutritious and cheap also. The ripe one can be eaten raw. Different sweet eatables (Palaharam) and puddings (Pradhaman and Pulissery) can be made out of it. The seeds inside the fruits are also used after cooking. They are used as side dishes for lunch.
