    Children are more committed !

The students of Aravukad Higher Secondary School, Punnapra, Alappuzha have come out with novel action to teach the elders how important is the Forest. The UN has declared this year as the 'International year of forests', noting the pathetic condition of forests all over the world.

The awareness programme proposed by the UN is translated into a local issue by the students of this school. They held their hands together and formed a chain around the sacred grove (Kavu) near their school, as a symbolic gesture to protect the trees and other greenery within.

They carried placards with messages such as "say no to development that destroys forests and nature". The students also took pledge to protect trees at any cost and to plant fresh saplings.

Local MP (a union Minister) and MLA attended the function as guests in addition to teachers and local people.

The practical way of drawing attention of the elders of the importance of trees and forests is commendable.LEAF international and ENO invite all schools to participate in the event on 21'st september 2011 -UN'S World Peace Day - to plant trees as part of a global campaign.Schools can participate on this day and use it as part of teaching curriculum and thus they can be a part of the global net work.Media should help to increase the awareness of such campaign
